Dr. Joel Wallach

A biomedical research pioneer, Dr. Joel D. Today, Dr. Wallach is renowned for his groundbreaking research on the health benefits of selenium and other minerals. He currently dedicates his time to lecturing throughout the world on the therapeutic benefits of vitamins and minerals, and on lobbying the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on behalf of the dietary supplement industry.

Nurse Joanne Conaway fills in for Dr. Wallach.  Joanne starts todays show discussing a study that linked a lowered heart attack and stroke risk in people with normal cholesterol levels to taking the statin drug Crestor.  With the study author saying this means at least another 10 million people should be on the drug.  However Joanne points out that the study was funded and desgined by the company who makes Crestor.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Joanne Conaway discuss two news stories.  The first regards a survey that found more and more families are eating meals together at least 5 days a week.  These families also tended to eat heathier diets than families who did not eat together.  The second article concerns another study that found children as young as 2 years old were already forming food preferences.  These preferences also tended to mimic the diets of the children's parents.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a study that found that on any given day 7000 hospital patients contract the bacteria clostridium difficile.  Also on any given day 300 people may die from the infection.  Many are now worried this bacteria will become the new superbug.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss two studies recently presented at the American Heart Association's annual meeting.  The first anecdotal study found that the numbers of people 65 and older hospitalized for heart failure rose by 131% in the past 27 years.  The other study claimed a 44% reduced risk for those with healthy cholesterol levels if these healthy people would start taking statin drugs.  However, the study was funded by the makers of Crestor one of the most popular statin drugs.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a study that found a link between green tea compounds and reduced rates of type I diabetes.  The researchers also discovered that the green tea antioxidant compound EGCG also reduced the symptoms involved with Sjogren's syndrome.
