Dr. Joel Wallach

A biomedical research pioneer, Dr. Joel D. Wallach spent more than 40 years in the field of Veterinary Medicine, observing and researching the effects of individual nutrients on animal health, before becoming a Naturopathic Physician in 1982. Today, Dr. Wallach is renowned for his groundbreaking research on the health benefits of selenium and other minerals. He currently dedicates his time to lecturing throughout the world on the therapeutic benefits of vitamins and minerals, and on lobbying the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on behalf of the dietary supplement industry.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing weight loss citing the statistics of over-weight and obese adutls in the U.S.  He outlines several of the weight loss products available throught the Youngevity family of companies.  Also asserting that people can turn helping people lose weight into an additional income stream.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news story concerning a study on pre-term babies.  These babies are at risk for a number of serious health challenges including cerebral palsy.  Affecting movement, motor skills and muscle coordination.  The study found a link between magnesium sulfate infusions (during labor) and a reduced rate of CP (cerebral palsy).  Doc disagrees contending that CP is a congenital birth defect that happens within the first month or two of gestation.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing woman who plays basketball in a Eurpean league for Spain.  As a athlete she is concerned about the longevity of her career especially with respect to joint health.  Doc explains that connective tissues such as cartilage and ligaments can be rebuilt with the proper nutrition.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article concerning Olympic swimmer Dana Torres who at the age of 41 won 3 silver medals in Bejing.  Unfortunately she is set to undergo surgery for degnerative arthritis in her shoulder.  Doc contends that her problem is really a nutritional deficiency.

Pharmacist Ben Fuchs fills in for Dr. Wallach.  Ben starts the show discussing the importance of fats for good health.  However, he is quick to point out that he is not referring to the kinds of fats found in things like potato chips.  He is referring to the "good fats" known as essential fatty acids.  The types found in nuts, seeds and certain cold water fishes.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Ben Fuchs discuss a news article concerning two conflicting studies on blood glucose levels.  Specifically the studies looked at aggressive blood glucose control in critically ill patients.  One study indicated that aggressively controlled blood sugars increased death risk the other found the opposite.  Neither study looked at controlling blood insulin levels.
