Dr. Joel Wallach

A biomedical research pioneer, Dr. Joel D. Wallach spent more than 40 years in the field of Veterinary Medicine, observing and researching the effects of individual nutrients on animal health, before becoming a Naturopathic Physician in 1982. Today, Dr. Wallach is renowned for his groundbreaking research on the health benefits of selenium and other minerals. He currently dedicates his time to lecturing throughout the world on the therapeutic benefits of vitamins and minerals, and on lobbying the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on behalf of the dietary supplement industry.

Pharmacist Ben Fuchs fills in for Dr. Wallach.  Ben starts the show discussing the most recent recommendation from the American Dermatological Association regarding sun screen application.  The ADA is recommending that people should put an amount equal to that of men using shaving cream in their hand and then slather it on.  Ben disagrees calling sun screens poison that should be avoided.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Ben Fuchs discuss a recent British study that found vitamin D supplementation in young children lowered their risk of later developing type 1 diabetes.   An analysis of current research indicated that those infants who were supplemented vitamin D had a 29% lower risk of developing the disease than those who did not supplement.

Dr. Wallach starts the show today discussing a story about a young boy diagnosed with a cardiomyopathy heart attack.  His doctor wanted to put him on a heart transplant list but his grandfather disagreed.  Convincing the parents it was worth putting the boy on a nutritional supplement program first.  The parents agreed and put him on the Pig Pack from Youngevity and the boy was able to go home without the transplants.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a recent news article concerning drug complications among seniors.  Every year in the U.S. 38 million elderly people suffer drug complications and of those 180,000 are life threatening.  The article outlines several strategies to help determine if a loved one is experiencing "poly-pharmacy" and what can be done.

Doug Winfrey and Joanne Conaway discuss a news article concerning the rise of a "super bug".  The numbers of people hospitalized with C-diff infections doubled in the U.S. between 2000 and 2005.  Researchers believe it is linked to overuse and inappropriate use of antibiotics.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss recent research that is linking longevity to certain genes that have been identified.  The research indicates that these genes can be fooled by Resveratrol into producing enzymes that crank up the immune system.
