Dr. Joel Wallach

A biomedical research pioneer, Dr. Joel D. Wallach spent more than 40 years in the field of Veterinary Medicine, observing and researching the effects of individual nutrients on animal health, before becoming a Naturopathic Physician in 1982. Today, Dr. Wallach is renowned for his groundbreaking research on the health benefits of selenium and other minerals. He currently dedicates his time to lecturing throughout the world on the therapeutic benefits of vitamins and minerals, and on lobbying the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on behalf of the dietary supplement industry.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing a new federal law requiring makers of nutritional supplements had to report adverse events involving the supplements.  The sponsors of the law cited adverse events involving the herb ephedra to push the law.  So far since the new law was instituted there have been 604 adverse events reported involving these supplements.  In the same 6 month period there were  482,152 reports of adverse events associated with pharmaceutical drugs.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a study from Tufts University.  The study looked at food cravings associated with weight loss.  Find that 91% of women in the study reported experiencing food cravings.  The study found that those who occasionally gave in to the cravings were more likely to have success managing their weight.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing the ever widening problem of childhood obesity.  A recent article in the Journal of the American Medical Associtation contends that there is no end in sight.  The article then goes on to say that the only way to deal with this problem is with stomach banding procedures.  In this procedure the stomach is banded to make it significantly smaller thus less food and hopefully weight loss.  Doc disagrees outlining several of the short cominng invovled with the stomach banding procedure.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a research study from Canada on vitamin D3 deficiencies.  This study found that children found to have the lowest blood levels of vitamin D were more likely to later test positive for MS (multiple sclerosis) than those with higher levels of the vitamin.

Dr. Wallach starts the show today discussing the recent storms in the southern and midwest regions of the country.  Asserting that all of the damage from flooding and winds are stressing local economies.  He contends that this in turn could put people working for cities, counties and states out of work.  Doc then outlines how multiple income streams are a very good idea during difficult ecomomic times.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a research study from New Zealand on the use of aceteminophen in children.  The study of over 200,000 children under the age of one in 31 countries found a link between aceteminophen increased the risk of asthma and allergies.  Those getting the pain reliever before age one were 46% more likely to develop nasal allergies and asthma.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a growing trend among some internists and family practice doctors.  It's called "concierge medicine" where patients pay up front fees often as high as $1500 a year with the promise of better care.  The primo service claims shorter or no waiting room waits, immediate access to doctors through cell phone or pager, same day or next day appointments and "full" extensive physical exams.
