Monologue

Dr. Wallach discusses a recent report that found the osteoporosis drug Fosamax is linked to an increased risk of atrial fibrulation in women.  This risk is double that of women who do not take Fosamax.  The article also contends that this drug helps build bone which Doc asserts is not true.  Contending the drug slows the natural bone tear down process.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a report published in the Journal of the American Medical Association that strongly criticizes the FDA's handling of trials of synthetic blood products.  As early as 2000 the FDA was aware that these synthetic blood substitutes increased the risk of heart attack and death.  Accident victims  who unknowingly were given the experimental drug faced a 30% increased risk of death and a 171% increased risk of suffering a heart attack.  The FDA withheld this data from the public to protect the manufacturor's "trade secrets".

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article concerning new technologies and the medical industry.  A recent survey found that fewer than 31% of doctors return email from their patients.  Most doctors claim this is due to legal liabilities that could put their malpractice insurance in harms way.  It should also be stated that most insurance companies don't pay doctors for emails while they will pay for phone consultations.

  • Janie has questions concerning glutathione and interactions with nutritional supplements.
  • Joanne has a follow-up question regarding her dog.
