Pearls of Wisdom
Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article about study of antibiotic use. It's long been known that the over prescribing of antibiotics has lead to many health challenges including superbugs that kill thousands. Now a new side effect has come to light and that is weight gain. Researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health analyzed health records of some 160,000 children ages 3 to 18. Collecting data on the childrens BMIs (body mass index). Finding those getting antibiotics seven or more times by age 15 weighed more than those who got no drugs. Researchers believe this is due to changes in the microbiome as both "good" and "bad" bacteria were killed off.
