Dr. Joel Wallach

A biomedical research pioneer, Dr. Joel D. Wallach spent more than 40 years in the field of Veterinary Medicine, observing and researching the effects of individual nutrients on animal health, before becoming a Naturopathic Physician in 1982. Today, Dr. Wallach is renowned for his groundbreaking research on the health benefits of selenium and other minerals. He currently dedicates his time to lecturing throughout the world on the therapeutic benefits of vitamins and minerals, and on lobbying the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on behalf of the dietary supplement industry.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing the high cost of health care.  Comparing it to other industries such as auto and home repairs where high costs drove consumers to start the "do-it-yourself" concept.  Doc contends that the same is true with the health system the less we use it and the more we do for ourselves the lower costs might go.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a  report put out by the American Academy of Pediatrics.  The report is recommending that most children from infants to teens aren't getting enough vitamin D3.  Contending that children as well as adults should be supplementing with at least 400 units daily.   While the government contends they need to study this in more depth to decide if they need to change their guide lines from the current 200 units daily.

Dr. Wallach starts the show today promoting his latest book that is just about ready to come off the presses.  The book titled "Immortality" outlines what Doc calls the 4 basic steps in diet needed to live to be 100 years old.  The first step is to eat a calorie restricted diet of under 1500 calories daily.  Second he recommends taking all 90 essential nutrients especially minerals.  Third he contends people should take an antioxidant product that has an ORAC (oxygen reactive absorbtion capacity) value of 20,000 to 25,000.  Finally Doc contends that diets should include foods rich in antioxidants such as flavonoids and resveratrol found in chocolate and red wine.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article that concerns research done in the U.S. on lung cancer risks.  The study found that smokers and ex-smokers could reduce their risk of lung cancer by up to 60% by consuming one glass of red wine daily.  The study was one of the first to take into account socioeconomic status that can affect alcohol consumption and lung cancer risk.

Dr. Wallach starts the show today discussing the health benefits of dark chocolate.  Outlining the various compounds found in chocolate that are beneficial for good health.  Doc then lists the different products available through the Youngevity family of companies that have these same health benefits.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach continue discussing the health benefits of dark chocolate.  Doug cites an Italian study that found the consumption of dark chocolate reduces the blood levels of CRP (C-reactive proteins).  Higher blood levels of CRP have previously been associated with the kind of inflammation that has been linked to heart and blood vessel disease.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss two news articles concerning pharmaceutical companies.  The first concerns a lawsuit filed against Pfizer the world's largest drugmaker.  The suit contends that the company withheld or altered conclusions of studies that found there was no evidence to support claims made about the anti-seizure drug Neurotin.  Next they discuss a recent moves by the FDA in pulling TV ads for Bayer AG's birth control drug Yaz.   The FDA says the ads overstate the drugs effectivness in treating premenstural syndrome and understated the side effects.
