Dr. Joel Wallach

Today, Dr. Wallach is renowned for his groundbreaking research on the health benefits of selenium and other minerals. He currently dedicates his time to lecturing throughout the world on the therapeutic benefits of vitamins and minerals, and on lobbying the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on behalf of the dietary supplement industry.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing some of the health problems associated with weight gain and obesity. Asserting that he believe this is caused by mineral deficiencies and can be corrected through proper diet and supplementation.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss two news stories regarding medical mistakes. The first concerns a woman who had her tonsils removed but could not swallow any solids or liquids. Two days following the surgery the woman coughed up three bloody pieces of gauze that had been left behind. Doc relates a story of a personal friend who had three sponges left following oral surgery. The woman a former Marine later died from complications. They also discuss the story of a man who died after falling off a surgical table while waiting for surgery.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing the fact that many surgeries are not needed. Citing previous studies that report some knee surgeries such as knee replacements are unwarranted. Also contending that many of lower back surgeries are also unnecessary.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss two news stories the first concerns a study that found up to 61% of ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) reconstruction surgery are unnecessary. The study compared people who had immediate surgery for ACL tears and those who had physical therapy. Finding some of those getting physical therapy fared just as well as those getting surgery two years later. The second story concerns a study that those people with high levels of HDL had fewer heart attacks. However those taking statin drugs to lower their LDL the same was not true.

Explaining how diabetes and the metabolic syndrome are related to obesity and weight gain but one doesn't cause the other. Contending that bariatric surgeries and drugs are not the way to go. Outlining several of the Youngevity weight loss programs and products.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss three news articles regarding obesity. The first concerns the extra costs on the healthcare system that obesity causes. Next they discuss a school district in Massachusetts that is weighing children to determine the child's BMI (body mass index) and then sending a report to the parent. Finally they discuss a news article from the Economic Policy Journal that contends part of the economic stimulus bill is that starting in 2014 every American will be required to have an "electronic health record". Part of the record will be each American's calculated BMI to be posted on a "national exchange".

Asserting that many people have digestive problems and aren't aware. Contending that virtually all health challenges can be traced back to digestive issues.

Doug Winfrey and Ben Fuchs discuss a news article regarding a study on household cleaning supplies. The study of over 1400 women found that those who used common household cleaners regularly had twice the risk of developing breast cancer. Researchers believe this link is because the cleaners contain "endocrine disrupting chemicals".
