Monologue

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing a report out on diabetes. The report states that more and more people are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes every year. The complications associated with diabetes such as amputations, blindness and weight gain are also increasing. Doc asserts that diabetes is not genetic as many doctors often tell their patients.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article regarding healthcare in Boise, Idaho. Apparently a few years ago the largest provider in the city St. Luke's Health System started buying up all of the private practices from doctors of all types. Now over half of the 1400 doctors in southwestern Idaho are employed by St. Luke's or a smaller company St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center. A monopoly is now in place and doctors are forced to meet financial goals by performing unnecessary procedures and test or by admitting patients that don't need to be hospitalized. With some procedures quadrupling in price as well as preferential agreements with providers.

Researchers found in study of nearly 1000 patients of those that got knee replacements 30% gained 5% or more of their body weight within 5 years of the surgery.
