Monologue

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing kidney failure. Contending this should not be called "kidney failure" but rather PAD (peripheral artery disease". Asserting that what causes kidney failure is the blockage of the small afferent arterioles in the kidney are blocked. This can result in diminished kidney function as well as high blood pressure.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach continue discussing kidney problems. Two recent studies found a link between consumption of sugary drinks and reduced kidney function. The first study from Japan found that those drinking two sugary drinks daily were twice as likely to have kidney dysfunction compared to those in the study who drank no such drinks. Another study looked at kidney function in rats that consumed sugary drinks. Those getting the sugary drinks were much more sensitive to a protein that regulates salt.
