Dr. Joel Wallach

A biomedical research pioneer, Dr. Joel D. Wallach spent more than 40 years in the field of Veterinary Medicine, observing and researching the effects of individual nutrients on animal health, before becoming a Naturopathic Physician in 1982. Today, Dr. Wallach is renowned for his groundbreaking research on the health benefits of selenium and other minerals. He currently dedicates his time to lecturing throughout the world on the therapeutic benefits of vitamins and minerals, and on lobbying the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on behalf of the dietary supplement industry.

Monologue

Dr. Wallach starts the show today discussing the problem of obesity. Asserting that despite the fact the U.S. spends more healthcare than all other industrialized nations. we are number one in obesity. Doc contends this is because the government and medical system are wrong about what causes weight gain. He believes it's not a lack of will power or a problem of excess. But rather caused by mineral deficiencies.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach disucss two news articles concerning breast cancer. The first article regards a study done at the University of Texas on accelerated partial breast irradiation. First approved in 2002 and becoming increasingly popular for treating early-stage breast cancer. Researchers found that compared to the traditional method of irradiating the whole breast the newer method increases the risk of mastectomy by 200%. Second they discuss an article that outlines places in the evironment that expose women to cancer causing substances.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing a news article regarding the aging of U.S. Presidents. Although their is a perception that presidents age quickly once in office the article points out that the last several presidents actually lived longer than the norm for other U.S. men. Doc compares this to the death of last oldest living man who died at age 112. In the article concerning the oldest man his daughter exclaimed that her father broke all the "nutritional rules". Eating lots of dairy and fats instead of taking cholesterol lower drugs or low fat diets.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a report out from consumer watchdog "Environmental Working Group". The report states that only about one quarter of kids breakfast cereals meet government guidelines for added sugar. The guidelines state these cereals should have no more than 26% added sugar by weight. Some of the more popular cereals have more than 40% added sugar.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing several health challenges that he believes are caused by nutritional deficiencies. Outlining some nutrients such as folic acid that when deficiend are now known to cause birth defects. Contending that most disease states can be prevented or reversed with supplementation. Asserting that all parents and grandparents should be getting their children on a supplement plan starting preferably before conception.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article regarding a study on knee replacements. Since the late 1970's the percentage of people over the age of 65 complaining of knee pain has increased 300%. Despite rates of knee arthritis being stable the percentage of older Americans getting knee replacements has increased almost 900%. The researchers weren't certain why but think it's because of obesity and an aging population.

Dr. Wallach starts the show today discussing an impending epidemic within the healthcare system. Contending that the leading edge of 80 million baby boomers is now reaching age 65. This will put a huge burden on the Medicare system with epidemics of what Doc calls "preventable" and "reversible" diseases.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article regarding IVF (invetro fertilization). A study found that over 300 pregant women that used IVF only 47% were successful. With the cost ranging from over $1100 up to over $38,000 depending on the intesity of the treatment. The study also found that when the numbers were crunched to show only the women who were successful the cost rose to as much as $76,000.
