Also based on guidelines from the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology there was uncertainty whether the stent inserting surgery was appropriate in another half of patients. Doug asserts they reason is because these procedures cost between $12,000 and $15,000 compared to a few hundred for other treatments such as medications.

Monologue

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing a story from a couple of years ago when the American Pediatric Association endorsed the use of statin drugs for children as you as eight years old. Doc asserts he believes this is criminal because a child's brain is not fully developed at that age. The human body uses cholesterol to make myelin that insulates neural synapes. Pointing out the human brain is actually about 80% myelin.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article concerning a recent report out from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The report states that nearly one quarter of adolescents are either diabetic or pre-diabetic. Jumping from 9% in 1999 to 23% in 2008 for kids ages 12 to 19.
