Dr. Joel Wallach

A biomedical research pioneer, Dr. Joel D. Wallach spent more than 40 years in the field of Veterinary Medicine, observing and researching the effects of individual nutrients on animal health, before becoming a Naturopathic Physician in 1982. Today, Dr. Wallach is renowned for his groundbreaking research on the health benefits of selenium and other minerals. He currently dedicates his time to lecturing throughout the world on the therapeutic benefits of vitamins and minerals, and on lobbying the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on behalf of the dietary supplement industry.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing all of problems associated with the U.S. medical system. Citing the numbers of infections patients acquire while in the medical system. Asserting that all of the screening test don't prevent disease and don't even lower mortality rates. Contending these test do unfortunately produce many false positives that lead to more invasive tests and procedures that often harm patients.

 

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article concerning a study of a device that could replace daily injectable pens for osteoporosis patients. Some osteoporosis patients who can't tolerate the bisphosphonates (Fosamax, Boniva) take Forteo which requires daily injections. Now a device maker has developed a microchip that could release the drug on demand via a wireless remote. Or the doctor could controll the dosing through a computer or cell phone.

Dr. Peter Glidden fills in for Dr. Wallach today starting the show discussing a news report on medical mistakes. A metaanalysis study concluded that 783,936 people die while in the care of the medical system. Making the medical industry the number one killer of Americans more than heart disease or cancer. While costing 468 billion dollars a year in care within the medical system.

 

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Glidden discuss a news article on osteoarthritis. The author is advocating not using pharmaceutical drugs to treat pain from arthrits. According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Prevention and Control) some 20 million Americans have joint disease with osteoarthritis being the most common. Cost $128 billion to treat and the CDC is predicting some 8 million more Americans with develope joint disease in the next 10 years. To manage pain the author recommends over-weight people to lose 5% of their body fat. Also recommending cutting foods from the diet that cause inflammation. As well as adding anti-inflammatory foods like ginger and turmeric. Excercising with yoga, stretching and deep breathing. Not one mention of nutritional supplementation to give the body the building blocks needed to regrow cartilage.

Dr. Peter Glidden fills in for Dr. Wallach starting show discussing the death of pop star Whitney Houston. Contending that once the toxicology reports come out everyone will know what chemicals were in her body. Asserting that his opinion is they will find she was on some sort of pharmaceutical drug that played a role in her death. Also citing other famous people who have died as a result of their association with some doctor who prescribed addictive drugs.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Glidden discuss a news article regarding a study on the use of antibiotics to treat chronic sinus infections. Researchers found no difference in symptoms between antibiotics and a placebo. Infectous disease experts contend the cause of sinus infections is bacteria less than two percent of the time. Meaning the rest are caused by viruses that aren't affected by antibiotics. While the fifth most common reason for prescribing antibiotics to adults is sinus infections.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing a report that came out a couple of years ago that predicts an impending epidemic of arthritis. Doc asserts that this doesn't have to happen. Contending that osteoarthritis is preventable and reversible with proper diet and nutrition.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach disucss two health related news stories. The first concerns two doctors that are facing charges of neglect for amputating the wrong leg. Next they discuss a report from the FDA that warns doctors and patients of an increased risk of femur fractures in people taking bisphosphonate drugs like Fosamax and Boniva for five years or longer.
