Dr. Joel Wallach

Pharmacist Ben Fuchs fills in for Dr. Joel Wallach beginning the show discussing a news article regarding the treatment of rheumatic diseases. Contending the mainstream common treatment is the use of the steroid Prednizone. The drug has many many negative side effects such as weight gain and liver failure. Contending that most chronic degenerative diseases can be traced to inflammatory reponses to something entering the system.

 

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Ben Fuchs discuss two news articles concerning diet and health. The first article concerns the FDA's recently announced plan to require the food industry to eventually get rid of trans fats completely over time. Stating that without trans fats in our diets 20,000 heart attacks and 7000 deaths would be stopped. Doug then cites statistics from the CDC regarding how many deaths occur annually from pharmaceutical drugs. In fact more people die from adverse drug interactions than die from motor vehicle accidents every year. Doug and Ben ask "why isn't the FDA taking drugs off of the market?"

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing a opinion piece in a Canadian paper. In the article a reader asks if glucosamine chondroitin can help relieve joint pain. The local expert MD basically wrote that it might not work. Doc disagrees stating the old saying "you are what you eat" with the exception that in reality it is "you are what you absorb". Contending that if a person has absorbtion problems no amount of supplements will work very well. Citing two studies from Harvard Medical School that state surgery for knee and back pain are useless.

 

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article concerning a study on testosterone treatments. The study of over 9000 veterans who underwent angiography because they had experienced chest pain or were at high risk of coronary disease. Finding those who received testosterone treatments were about 30% more likely to suffer a heart attack, stroke or die when compared to those not getting the hormone.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing longevity. Asserting that cultures that live longer are still using wood ash in their gardens. These same cultures also are usually third world countries with less access to healthcare. Contending these people live so long because they aren't taking drugs or getting surgical procedures.

Bill Graff and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article concerning a surgeon charged with healthcare fraud. Over the course of four years Dr. Spyro Panos submitted claims in excess of $35 million. Claiming at times he perform as many as 20 or more surgical procedures daily. Also at one point claiming he saw as many as 90 patients in a single day.

Asserting that it is now known taking statin drugs can increase a persons risk of getting type 2 diabetes. Citing dietary and lifestyle changes that can be used to control diabetes without drugs with nasty side effects.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article that cites 10 symptoms of type 2 diabetes. Things like frequent urination, sudden weight loss, hunger pangs, dry itchy skin, slow healing of cuts and infections, chronic yeast infections, fatigue and irritability, blurry vision, numb and tingling hands and feet and blood tests.
