Dr. Joel Wallach

Today, Dr. Wallach is renowned for his groundbreaking research on the health benefits of selenium and other minerals. He currently dedicates his time to lecturing throughout the world on the therapeutic benefits of vitamins and minerals, and on lobbying the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on behalf of the dietary supplement industry.

Pharmacist Ben Fuchs fills in for Dr. Wallach starting the show discussing how he met Doc. Outlining many of Dr. Wallach's credentials and accomplishments. As well as explaining his own credentials and his approach to treating health challenges.

Doug Winfrey and Ben Fuchs discuss a news article concerning a report out from the government. The report states that most drugs are ok for women to take while they are breastfeeding. Both Ben and Doug contend this is a bad idea because drugs react differently in children that adults. So it is foolish to recommend women take pharmaceuticals while breastfeeding an infant.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing weight loss as that is a "New Years Resolution" for many people. Doc contends that the reason many people have difficutly losing weight is because they go about it wrong. Asserting that weight gain and obesity are not due to excess or lack of will power. But rather a problem of deficiency outlining his theory that it the result of mineral deficiencies.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a couple of news stories. The first concerns a growing trend of hospitals making their employees "smoke free". Doing so by testing applicants for nicotine if they are positive they are offered help quitting and asked ot re-apply after they have quit the habit. Next they discuss a story about foods that help boost the immune system.

Dr. Wallach starts the show today discussing a news story on the eating disorder "Pica". Where people have a odd craving for non-food items. The story certered around a young girl who had to be hospitalized after eating a light bulb. The story contended that Pica is a rare disorder however Dr. Wallach disagrees. Asserting that people who binge eat food items such as chips and junk food actually have a form of Pica.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news story concerning a report from the American Academy of Pediatrics. The report is a widening of the guidelines for ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). Previously the guidelines targeted children ages 6 to 12 now under the new guidelines children ages 4 to 18 are targeted. The report also recommends drugs if behavioral interventions don't show improvement.
