Monologue

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing all of the celebrities that have died over the past few months. Outlining how he believes that Andy Rooney, Dick Clark and Neil Armstrong all died due to medical mistakes. Citing the statistics of how many Americans die each and every year at the hands of the medical doctors.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article regarding a study on sleep apnea. A Swedish study found half of all those in the study had mild to severe sleep apnea. With a sleep apnea defined as a patient who experiences at least five espisodes an hour where they stopped breathing for longer than 10 seconds. Doc asserts this is normal behavior and that this is a doctor invented disease. Invented to sell drugs, surgeries and breathing machines.

Monologue

Dr. Peter Glidden fills in for Dr. Wallach today starting the show discussing how he believes the medical system is broken. Contending it is a "for profit" industry not one focused on improving health. Citing the overuse of dangerous CT scans as an example of overused technology that results in too many unnecessary treatments and procedures.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Glidden continue discussing the overuse of CT scans. Doug cites a recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The study found that there is no evidence that CT scans save lives or found more heart attacks than tradional lower cost testing. Also the CT scans exposed patients to more radiation than traditional tests plus often added other possibly harmful testing and procedures.

Monologue

Dr. Wallach starts the show citing several previous studies on joint surgeries. These studies found that many commonly performed surgeries do not work in the long run. Some knee surgeries have been found to be unwarranted as well as surgery of the lower back for sciatica.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss two news articles regarding research studies on acid reflux drugs. Both stories published by the same news agency on the same day seem to partially contridict one another. The first was a statement from the FDA regarding possible changes to the warning labels of both prescription and over-the-counter acid reflux drugs. The label change was to warn of links to fractures of the hip, wrist and spine when taking the drugs for a year or more. The later story recanted a link to fractures associated with the over-the-counter acid reflux drugs. However the FDA did acknowledge that people taking these drugs for prolonged periods of time or those exceeding the recommended dosages may still be at risk of fractures.

Monologue

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing a news article on hospice care. Remarking that in recent years hospice expenditures have increased by more than 70%. Asserting this is because Medicare is paying less and less to doctors so they are sending these patients to hospice care. Once there doctors do unnecessary treatments and procedures to milk money from Medicare.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article on health care costs. A report out from the Institute of Medicine contends that the U.S. health care system wastes $750 billion a year. This due to unnecessary services, inefficient delivery of care, excess administrative costs, inflated prices, prevention failures and fraud.
