Dr. Joel Wallach

Dr. Wallach starts today's show discussing dementia.  Citing a study from India that found those who spoke several languages had a delay in dementia of at least four years.  Also citing several other studies that have found increases in cognition by excrcising the mind through reading.  Outlining the four different types of dementia the causes and possible ways to reverse the symptoms.


Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article concerning studies of fast food's effects on the brain.  A study from the University of Toronto offered to give people a small cash reward the next day or a larger payout a week later.  Those who were asked while in a fast food line were 40% more likely take the quicker payout compared to people asked in a full service restaurant.  Connecticut College study found that rats offered Oreo cookies, cocaine or morphine were just as attracted to the cookies as the drugs.  In fact when researchers examined the rat's brains they found those getting the cookies showed greater pleasure center activation than those getting the drugs.

Dr. Wallach starts the show today discussing gluten intolerance and links to celiac disease, IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), Crohn's disease and lupus.  Explaining how this intolerance to gluten causes the small intestine to become inflammed much like skin exposed to poison oak.  Contending this causes people to suffer a myriad of health challenges due to a lack of nutrient absorbtion.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article concerning a film out that is promoting vaganism.  Although the film is promoting a vegan lifestyle not supported by Dr. Wallach it does point to some important health ideas.  Such as the idea that many if not all health challenges can be prevented and reversed by proper diet and nutritional supplementation.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing high blood pressure now becoming an epidemic.  Asserting that usually the cause of high blood pressure is a simple mineral deficiency.  Or possibly due to PAD (peripheral artery disease) which is also a nutritional deficiency.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article on salmonella outbreaks a big chain restaurants.  One occurred late last year in 10 states infecting 68 people 20 of which were hospitalized.  However, the name of that chain was never released to the public by the FDA nor  the CDC.  Both federal agencies knew which "Mexican-style" chain of restaurants was involved.  According to a statement from an unnamed FDA spokesperson it is the policy of both agencies NOT to release the name of the company if there is not an ongoing public health threat.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article  regarding acid reflux.  The article outlines several "natural" ways to control heartburn and acid reflux.  Unfortunately these various recommondations such as baking soda, chewing gum and slippery elm block or reduce acid.  Doc asserting that acid reflux should be call "lack of acid" reflux. Because heartburn is caused by too little acid not too much.
