Dr. Joel Wallach

A biomedical research pioneer, Dr. Joel D. Wallach spent more than 40 years in the field of Veterinary Medicine, observing and researching the effects of individual nutrients on animal health, before becoming a Naturopathic Physician in 1982. Today, Dr. Wallach is renowned for his groundbreaking research on the health benefits of selenium and other minerals. He currently dedicates his time to lecturing throughout the world on the therapeutic benefits of vitamins and minerals, and on lobbying the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on behalf of the dietary supplement industry.

Dr. Wallach starts the show today discussing a news story on the eating disorder "Pica". Where people have a odd craving for non-food items. The story certered around a young girl who had to be hospitalized after eating a light bulb. The story contended that Pica is a rare disorder however Dr. Wallach disagrees. Asserting that people who binge eat food items such as chips and junk food actually have a form of Pica.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news story concerning a report from the American Academy of Pediatrics. The report is a widening of the guidelines for ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). Previously the guidelines targeted children ages 6 to 12 now under the new guidelines children ages 4 to 18 are targeted. The report also recommends drugs if behavioral interventions don't show mprovement.

Dr. Wallach and Char Murphy discuss gluten intolerance and Celiac disease. Outlining the difference between allergies and intolerance or enteritis. Detailing how the gluten destroys the villi in the small intestine reducing the ability to absorb nutrients.

Doug Winfrey, Dr. Wallach and Char Murphy continue discussing gluten intolerance. Citing statistics from a news article that questions the benefits of a gluten free diet. Researchers from the Mayo Clinic contend that one out of 100 Americans have Celiac disease. However only about 17% are aware they have the disorder. Recommending that people should get blood tests and biopsies to determine if they have a gluten intolerance.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing a news article concerning the medical community now labelling obesity as a "disease". Asserting they did this because now weight gain will be covered by insurance. Contending that now it is a disease people will be lining up to get baratric surgery, stomach stapling, lap banding and weight loss drugs. All paid for by insurance insuring that doctors continue making a lot of money to support their lavish lifestyes.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article concerning the long tern use of heartburn drugs. Long tern use of PPIs (proton pump inhibitors) can lead to lung infections because of aspiration. In 2012 the FDA put forth a warning these drugs increase the risk of serious bacterial infections that can lead to diarrhea and life theatening inflammation of the colon. There are also links to hip fractures because with decreased stomach acid deficiencies in nutrients such as calcium, magnesium and B12. Deficiencies in these nutrients can open the door to osteoporosis and anemia.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing peripheral neuropathies. Outlining several common health challenges and explaining why he believes they are due to neuropathies. Contending these neuropathies are actually due to nutritional deficiencies and can be reversed with supplementation.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news story on a report from the CDC (Centers for Dissease Prevention and Control). The report states that despite the government's efforts Americans are still fat. The percentage of adults that are obese is still 35.5% and children and teens are still at 17%. All the while the government and medical industry still have the wrong idea about what causes obesity. They think it's a lack of exercise and too much food. Dr. Wallach contends that obesity is a lack of nutrients not a lack of exercise.
