Dr. Joel Wallach

A biomedical research pioneer, Dr. Joel D. Wallach spent more than 40 years in the field of Veterinary Medicine, observing and researching the effects of individual nutrients on animal health, before becoming a Naturopathic Physician in 1982. Today, Dr. Wallach is renowned for his groundbreaking research on the health benefits of selenium and other minerals. He currently dedicates his time to lecturing throughout the world on the therapeutic benefits of vitamins and minerals, and on lobbying the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on behalf of the dietary supplement industry.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing the death of former astronaut Neal Armstrong. Who died on the operating table from complications during a heart bypass procedure. Doc outlines other famous people who have died during "routine procedures". Citing statistics of medical mistakes that occur every year that take patients lives.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news story regarding a patient refused treatment by her primary care physician. Dr. Helen Carter has started turning away patients who weigh more than 200 pounds. Citing the health of her office workers as the reason. Also contending that there is an obesity clinic at a local university that is better equiped to deal with obese patients. The AMA says this practice is not illegal nor is it unethical.

Outlining how easy it is to build an additional income stream for alternative income. Also citing other advantages of having a business such as tax shelters and the ability to involve family and friends.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article concerning a Harvard study on fluoradated water. The study analyzed 27 previous studies finding children who lived in areas where the water is highly fluoridated scored significantly lower on IQ test than children in lower fluoradation areas. Other studies in animals found the intake of fluoride was linked to the formation of beta-amyloid plaques (atypically associated with Alzheimer's disease).

Dr. Wallach starts the show today discussing medical mistakes. Outlining the numbers of people that are killed, injured and infected every year in the U.S. The U.S. ranked 17th in health and longevity according to a report from U.S. News and World Report in 1997. Currently that same report ranks the U.S. at 60th in health and longevity despite spending more on healthcare than all of other nations combined.

 

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article concerning a study on the burn out factor among doctors. The study from the Mayo Clinic involved nearly 7300 doctors answering questionaires regarding their enthusiasm about their jobs. Finding more than 4 out of every 10 doctors admitted they were emotionally exhausted of felt a high degree of cynicism, or depersonalization towards their patients.

Dr. Peter Glidden fills in for Dr. Wallach starting the show outlining his experiences at a recent continuing education conference. Stating that naturopathic medicine is unfortunately moving more towards allopathic or MD directed medicine. Citing a study on breast cancer and a supposed link between women drinking soy milk and a reduced risk of breast cancer. Pointing out the flaws in this uncontrolled research study.

 

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Glidden discuss a news article on the benefits of antioxidants in fighting disease. The article was mainly focusing on skin health and advocated people eat antioxidant rich foods. Unfortnately the story did not identify what these antioxidant rich foods are. The story also did not mention the importance of supplementing with antioxidants.
