Dr. Joel Wallach

A biomedical research pioneer, Dr. Joel D. Wallach spent more than 40 years in the field of Veterinary Medicine, observing and researching the effects of individual nutrients on animal health, before becoming a Naturopathic Physician in 1982. Today, Dr. Wallach is renowned for his groundbreaking research on the health benefits of selenium and other minerals. He currently dedicates his time to lecturing throughout the world on the therapeutic benefits of vitamins and minerals, and on lobbying the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on behalf of the dietary supplement industry.

Asserting that many of these if not all would still be here if they hadn't followed MD advice. Contending that Dick Clark, Neil Armstrong and Andy Rooney quite likely died due to medical mistakes.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Glidden discuss two news article concerning phthalates. Chemicals primarily used in the making of common household products that are made of plastic. In 2008 the government banned the use of these chemicals in children's toys and teething rings because of a potential for phthalates to leach out if the plastic is chewed or sucked on. Researchers at Columbia Center for Children's Environmental Health did a study of nearly 250 children and found that all had trace amounts of phthalates in their urine. Phthalates have been linked to an increased risk of asthma, disruption of the endocrine system and prenatal exposure linked to childhood eczema.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing a news article on a study on organic food. Researchers contend that organic foods have no more nutritional value than other foods. Doc asserts that organic only means no chemicals were used to grow and harvest foods. Something he's been talking about this since the 1960s.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news story regarding a study on a commonly found chemical called perflourooctanoic acid. This PFOA chemical used household products like food packaging, carpets, paint and nonstick cookware. The study found that 98% of Americans have trace amounts in their blood. The study found that those with the highest blood levels were twice as likely to have a history of heart disease, heart attack or stroke.

Citing a news article from a couple of years ago where the authors predicted this epidemic because of aging "baby boomers". Doc contends that there are 72 joints in the body that orthapedic doctors are looking to get rich by replacing. Also asserting there are alternatives to joint replacements.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article regarding the growing problem of "polypharmacy". This is the practice of giving seniors multiple medications often to combat side effects of other medications. The report contends that one-third of Americans ages 57 to 85 are taking five or more prescriptions. It also states that those with chronic conditions are taking 20 or more medications. Doc asserts that this is criminal but no one will go to jail.

Dr. Wallach starts todays show discussing hospital and clinic acquired infections. In fact some 90.000 people die every year in the U.S. due to these medical setting acquired infections. Telling the story of a medical doctor that discovered that women whose babies were delivered by midwives were less likely to die from "childbirth fever". While women whose babies were delivered by medical doctors were dying at close to a 30% rate. This doctor realized the midwives were washing their hands while doctors did not.

 

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article regarding MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) or "super bugs". The story outlines the fact that over 20 babies in Sutter Memorial Hospital's neo-natal intensive care unit have been exposed to MRSA. The director of the hospital is quoted in the article as saying they weren't sure how this happened. Doc asserts it is because hospital staff and visitors aren't washing their hands.
