Dr. Joel Wallach

A biomedical research pioneer, Dr. Joel D. Wallach spent more than 40 years in the field of Veterinary Medicine, observing and researching the effects of individual nutrients on animal health, before becoming a Naturopathic Physician in 1982. Today, Dr. Wallach is renowned for his groundbreaking research on the health benefits of selenium and other minerals. He currently dedicates his time to lecturing throughout the world on the therapeutic benefits of vitamins and minerals, and on lobbying the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on behalf of the dietary supplement industry.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing the problem of obesity and weight gain in America. Citing technilogical advances as some of the reason behind this change. Starting with advances in heating and cooking so there were no longer wood ashes that used to be put in gardens. Then most people are now eating a lot of preprocessed foods that are full of preservatives and sugars.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article regarding a report on health care costs. The cost to insure a family of four has doubled in less than ten years. Health insurance for the average family is now pushing $20,000 a year. Add to that employers are scaling back on how much they pay towards theses costs.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing an impending epidemic of arthritis among the "baby boomer" generation. Asserting this is happening because people listened to their doctors and excercised without supplementing. Outlining a study that found knee and hip replacement surgery for pain is worthless. Because it doesn't address the underlying problem of bone loss due to nutritonal deficiencies.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article regarding a study from the University of Zurich. Researchers linked vitamin D deficiency to ten different common health challenges. Also stating that it is very difficult to get enough vitamin D through the diet. Recommending people should spend time in the sun and to supplement vitamin D.

Dr. Wallach begins the show discussing the four different types of dementia. Outlining each one citing the major symptoms and what causes each. Stating that all are due to nutritional deficiencies and asserting that they can often be reversed. Also discussing the importance of antioxidants for optimal health.

 

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss two news articles regarding studys on the health benefits of green tea. Both specifically looking at the organic chemical EGCG (epigallocotechin-3 gallate) a potent antioxidant. One study found that this compound facilitated the production of progenitor brain cells. Resulting in improved memory and spatial learning. The other study found that this chemical actually helped shrink cancerous tumors.

Dr. Peter Glidden fills in for Dr. Wallach today beginning the show discussing the Flexner report that came out in 1910. The report from Abraham Flexner a high school priciple hired by the Carnegie Foundation is the cornerstone of modern medicine. The report supported the teaching of phamaceutical medicine over homeopathic medicine. Explaining why naturopathic medicine is only legal in 16 states. Dr. Glidden asserts this and political manuevering is why our medical system is in the state it is today.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Glidden discuss a news article concering blood thinners. The article outlines five natural ways of thinning blood and reducing the risk of blood clots and strokes without all of the side effects. Citing turmeric, bromelain, ginger, garlic and water as ways of keeping blood thin and also reducing inflammation.
