Monologue

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing an editorial from the Annals of Internal Medicine.  Stating that the studies cited in the article don't say which multivitamins were taken or which vitamins were used in the studies.  Asserting that these researchers can't just "cherry pick" a couple of nutrients.  Contending the human body needs 90 essential nutrients for opitmal health.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach continue discussing the editorial from the Annals of Internal Medicine.  Doug points out that one of the studies cited in the editorial is inconclusive.  Because more than half of the study participants dropped out before the study was over.  While another one of the studies was a meta-analysis of several other studies.  Mainstream medical experts often dispute meta-analysis studies because the are not "gold standard" double blind studies.

Monologue

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing special needs children and the families that are dealing with these issues.  Doc asserts that these types of birth defects should not happen because these problems aren't genetic.  Contending they are all preventable by nutritional supplementation preconception and during gestation.  Stating that in the animal or livestock industry these same types of congenital birth defects were eliminated decades ago.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss some news articles regarding the new energy efficient light bulbs.  A 2007 bill is set to take effect next year that will require all light bulbs to draw less wattage.  For example a 40 watt bulb can only draw 10.5 watts while a 60 watt bulb can only draw 11 watts.  Great for energy conservation however there could be problems down the road.  The new CFLs (compact fluorescent) bulbs could pose a health risk.  Not only do they contain liquid mercury that could possibly end up in ground water. But if slightly defective they can emit ultraviolet light that can cause skin damage.  The new LED (light emitting diode) bulbs are very expensive and can inhibit the production of melatonin the sleep hormone.  Also a Harvard study found that night shift workers exposed to light at night had increased risk of several types of cancer, diabetes, heart disease and obesity.

Monologue

Dr. Wallach starts the show citing a news article from a few years ago that states children born after 2001 won't outlive their parents.  Doc asserts this is because our food is so bad these days.  Asserting that years ago a milkshake actually was made from milk.  Now they're made from sweetened oils and these oils contain free radicals.  He continues to outline several common health challenges and the nutritional causes of these diseases.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article regarding a study of heartburn drugs.  The study found those taking proton-pump inhibitors (PPI) and histamine 2 receptor antagoists (H2 blockers) for two years or longer are 65% more likely to be B12 deficient.  Researchers contend these medications inhibit the production of gastric acid.  This lack of acid keeps the body from absorbing nutrients of all kinds.
