Dr. Joel Wallach

A biomedical research pioneer, Dr. Joel D. Today, Dr. Wallach is renowned for his groundbreaking research on the health benefits of selenium and other minerals. He currently dedicates his time to lecturing throughout the world on the therapeutic benefits of vitamins and minerals, and on lobbying the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on behalf of the dietary supplement industry.

Monologue

Nurse Joanne Conaway fills in for Dr. Wallach.  Joanne starts the show discussing high fructose corn syrup.  The corn industry has recently started running "damage control" TV commercials to extoll the virtues of products sweetened by the corn syrup.  This all because recent studies have concluded that the high fructose corn syrup is worse on health than even raw sugar.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Joanne Conaway discuss a couple of news stories concerning germs in our lives.  The first article outlines the various problems associated with hospital personel wearing surgical uniforms outside of the hospital prompting some hospitals to instruct guards at doors to not let those wearing operating room colors to leave wearing the garmets.  Second they discuss a British study about the germs found in cars.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing a study that indicated glucosamine and chondroitin don't work in helping rebuild joints.  Doc points out that these nutrients need other nutrients as co-factors to be used by the human body.  Contending that there are 90 essential nutrients for proper health.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a study that found in 1 and 8 surgeries there are discrepancies in "rountine count" of sponges and instruments.  The researchers also contend that items are actually left in patients in one in every 5000 surgeries.  Asserting that surgeons and operating staff should take these counts very seriously.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing the proposed "bail-out" of the financial industry.  Contending that part of the main problem is the loss of jobs due to extremely high medical costs.  Recommending starting home-based businesses to create multiple income streams as a hedge to lost jobs and lost investments.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss an opinion editorial written by a medical doctors.  The article contends that many of the "screening test" offered by doctors do very little good to prevent heatlh problems.  Specifically outlining the problems with cholesterol, prostate and colon testing.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussning all of the jobs leaving the U.S.  Asserting that most of this is due to the high cost of healthcare.  Contending that 10 years ago the U.S. ranked 17th among industrialized nations in health and longevity.  Now the U.S. ranks 47th in health and longivety despite spending more on healthcare than all of the other 46 countries combined.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article concerning a man in Texas that died of a heart attack while waiting for over 19 hours in an emergency waiting room.  Since 1996 the percentage of ER visits has risen by  32% while the number of ER's has declined by 7%.  According to the CDC the average wait time in an ER is 3.3 hours with some waiting as long as 24 hours.
