Dr. Joel Wallach

A biomedical research pioneer, Dr. Joel D. Wallach spent more than 40 years in the field of Veterinary Medicine, observing and researching the effects of individual nutrients on animal health, before becoming a Naturopathic Physician in 1982. Today, Dr. Wallach is renowned for his groundbreaking research on the health benefits of selenium and other minerals. He currently dedicates his time to lecturing throughout the world on the therapeutic benefits of vitamins and minerals, and on lobbying the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on behalf of the dietary supplement industry.

Dr. Wallach has been appearing recently with George Noory on Coast to Coast AM.

Doug Winfrey and Ben Fuchs discuss a news article concerning a report out from the American Academy of Pediatrics are asking the agriculture industry to stop using so many antibiotics. According to the report in 2012 more than 80% or 32.2 million pounds of antimicrobial agents went to animals not people. Of those 60% of the drugs are the same ones given to humans to help fight infections. Until very recently any farmer could walk into any feed store and by these drugs without a prescription.

Dr. Joel Wallach begins the show today talking about how quickly things are changing due to new technologies. Outlining how there are no more pay phones, first class mail is going away most don't have land lines any longer and printed newspapers and magazines are going away. Contending that people should consider starting a home based business so that people have income streams in case their jobs go away due to technology.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article concerning a study of coffee. The study found people who drink coffee daily have a lower risk of dying compared to those who drank no coffee. Early in the research they found no significant lowered risk until they excluded people who are smokers. After accounting for smokers researchers found that those drinking less than one cup of coffee and no more than three those people had a 6% to 8% lower risk of death. While those drinking three to five cups having a 15% lower risk and those drinking more than five cups had a 12% lower risk of dying.

The people are poor so generally don't eat more than 900 calories daily. They also burn wood to heat and cook and then put the wood ash in their gardens thus getting minerals in their food. As part of the "National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey" researchers looked at data from this study of over 17,000 Americans ages 19 and older. Find those who ate at least half a medium avocado daily had high levels of HDL, lower risk of metabolic syndrome, lower BMI (body mass index) and waist circumference.

Dr. Joel Wallach begins the show discussing new reports that indicate white middle aged people are dying at an alarming rate. Some believe this is due to addictions to alcohol, pharmaceutical drugs and street drugs. Doc asserts he believes this is because the baby boomers listened to the advice of their medical doctors. That is why two thirds are over weight or obese and dying from all kinds of preventable diseases.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article about autism in the U.S. A report from the Center for Health Statistics finds that 13% of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder don't have it when tested later. According to the CDC one in 68 children have an autism spectrum disorder with some saying is is actually one in 45. Experts believe the increases are due to better recognition of the symptoms. Since pediatricians are usually the first to diagnose autism some believe it is being over diagnosed.
