Dr. Joel Wallach

A biomedical research pioneer, Dr. Joel D. Wallach spent more than 40 years in the field of Veterinary Medicine, observing and researching the effects of individual nutrients on animal health, before becoming a Naturopathic Physician in 1982. Today, Dr. Wallach is renowned for his groundbreaking research on the health benefits of selenium and other minerals. He currently dedicates his time to lecturing throughout the world on the therapeutic benefits of vitamins and minerals, and on lobbying the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on behalf of the dietary supplement industry.

Dr. Wallach starts the show today discussing cholesterol.  Outlining how the medical industry has deemed cholesterol the "boogey man".  When in fact there is no strong evidence that cholesterol causes heart disease.  Only a correlation that those with heart disease often have higher levels.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss two recent news stories.  The first concerns a new study that found people taking Zocor (cholesterol lowering drug) often had poor quality of sleep.  Second Doug and Doc discuss another study that claims the "Adkins" diet is a high fat diet and could cause heart disease or strokes.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing a recent report that energy drinks can be bad for those with heart disease.  Doc explains the reason is the huge amounts of caffeine in these energy drinks.  Asserting that the jittery feelings people get after consuming the drinks is actually caffeine poison.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a recent report that found a huge increase in drugs prescribed to children.  The report presented at a meeting of the American Public Health Association stated that in a four year time frame there was a 166% increase in prescriptions for diabetes drugs in girls 10 to 14.  There were also increases in prescriptions for blood pressure, cholesterol, asthma and drepression medications.

Dr. Wallach starts todays show discussing arthritis and osteoporosis.  Contending that both disease states are the result of mineral deficiencies.  Asserting that minerals are no longer found in high enough concentrations in our range and crop soils.

Doug  Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss two recent news stories.  The first concerns a research study recently presented at a scientific session of the American Heart Association.  The study found women ages 35 to 55 who took oral contraceptives for 13 years or longer had an increased risk of stroke and heart attack years after stopping the medication.  Second Doug and Doc discuss a government report that has found 80% or more of fish consumed in the U.S. is imported.  Unfortunatley, less that 1% of that fish is inspected by the FDA.  Of the fish that is inspected the FDA finds the fish to be unhealthy and full of banned chemicals.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a recent news story regarding a government report.  Government investigators have found that the FDA only inspects foreign drug makers facilities once every 8 to 10 years.  While U.S. companies are inspected every two years as mandated by federal law.  No such law exists regarding foreign drug makers.  Despite the fact that 80% of active pharmaceutical ingrediants are imported and 40% of finished drugs are imported.
