Dr. Joel Wallach

A biomedical research pioneer, Dr. Joel D. Today, Dr. Wallach is renowned for his groundbreaking research on the health benefits of selenium and other minerals. He currently dedicates his time to lecturing throughout the world on the therapeutic benefits of vitamins and minerals, and on lobbying the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on behalf of the dietary supplement industry.

Pharmacist Ben Fuchs fills in for Dr. Wallach.  Ben starts the show today correcting statements he made regarding vitamin D3 in a show earlier this week.  He had mistakenly said vitamin D3 is the synthetic type when in fact the reverse is true.  Ben also continues by outlining the importance of the fatty vitamins for good health.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Ben Fuchs discuss a news article concerning a possible link between popular skin moisturizers and skin cancer.  The artilce was in regards to research done at Rutgers University where mice were treated with skin moisturizers and exposed to ultraviolet radiation to simulate sun exposure.  The treated mice had more and larger tumors after exposure to the radiation.

Nurse Joanne Conaway fills in for Dr. Wallach.  Joanne starts the show discussing her background as a nurse.  She then discusses a recent news article regarding the ingredients in ice cream.  According to the article many of the cheaper ice creams contain chemicals that are also found in anti-freeze and even some that are used to clean leather products.  Joanne suggest either making your own ice cream or at the very least read labels.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Joanne Conaway discuss a CDC report that outlines a dramatic increase in the length of ER visit wait times.  In 1996 the average wait was around 38 minutes now the wait time is closer to an hour.  Experts contend that the increase is due to more people going to the ER for "non-emergency" issues and also a decrease in the number of emergency departments.

Doug Winfrey and Ben Fuchs discuss a recent Australian study that found moderate drinking of beer, wine or gin during a meal helped to reduce overall blood sugar levels following the meal. In lean healthy individual postprandial glycemia (post meal blood sugar) by up to 37%.

Doug Winfrey and Ben Fuchs discuss a news story concerning the health risks of being overweight.  A research study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine states that 51% of overweight or 36 million Americans have normal blood pressure, blood cholesterol and blood sugar.  The study also found that one third of obese adults were within the healthy range.
