Monologue

Nurse Joanne Conaway fills in for Dr. Wallach.  Joanne discusses problems associated with a type II diabetes drug named Byetta.  Apparently the drug has been associated with an increased risk of pancreatitis.  However, the FDA has been reluctant to make label changes much less pull it from the marketplace.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Joanne Conaway discuss a recent study concerning Bispheol-A (BPA) found in most plastics.  For some time now many experts have speculated that this compound has been affecting the health of people.  A study has found a link between increased risk of diabetes and heart disease in adults.  Unfortunately despite the fact that BPA was once studied as a synthetic estrogen because of it's hormonal effects on people.  The FDA once again chooses to continue to claim it is safe.
