Pearls of Wisdom
Doug Winfrey and Melissa Golloday discuss a news article concerning doctors and pharmacists pairing dangerous drug combinations. The article was about an investigative story by the Chicago Tribune. Sending out 15 reporters to 255 pharmacies in four states. The reporters tried to fill prescriptions for clarithromycin (an antibiotic) and simvastatin (an anti-cholesterol drug). Alone the drugs are considered safe to take. However taken in combination they can be dangerous causing muscle tissue breakdown and could lead to kidney failure and possibly death. As many as 60% of the pharmacists did not warn the patients of the potential risk.
