Monologue

Nurse Joanne Conaway fills in for Dr. Wallach.  Joanne starts the show talking about a move start pasteurizing almonds rather than allowing them to be eaten raw.  Joanne contends that this process will kill off all of the good nutrients in the nuts.  This whole issue the result of 5 deaths from salmonella.  She comments that although the deaths are unfortunate pharmaceutical drugs kill thousands each year and they are still on the market.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Joanne Conaway discuss a recent research study that found caffeine from coffee and tea helped older women maintain mental acuity but the same result did not hold true for men.  In the study the women who drank three cups or more daily of coffee or tea were less likely to suffer a decline in verbal skills compared to those who drank a cup or less.
