Monologue

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing the deaths of Margaret Thatcher and Annette Funicello. Contending that both died from preventable diseases. Annette Funicello died from complications from MS (multiple sclerosis) and Margaret Thatcher died from a stroke. Doc asserts that no one should die from a stroke because they are preventable.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss two news articles the first concerns a report out from the Joint Commission a hospital accrediting group. The alert contends that as many as 500 patients have died because of "noise fatigue" beeping alarms are sometimes inadvertantly ignored by health care workers resulting in treatment delays thus endangering patients. Next they discuss another news article on a commonly prescribed heart drug called amiodarone used to treat heart arrhythmias or irregular heartbeats. A recent study found that people taking large doses over a long period of time have a 46% increased risk of developing cancer.
