The study re-analyzed a past trial of people with atrial fibrulation who had a high risk of stroke and were treated with drug combinations. Researchers found that those with atrial fibrulation two thirds had been prescribed digoxin a drug used to control abnormal heart rates either before or during the the 3.5 year study. Also finding that those prescribed digoxin were 41% more likely to die of any cause and 61% more likely to die from a heart rhythm problem.
