Monologue

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing a report that states Americans are living one and a half years longer now. But unfortunately the report also states that the majority of people living longer are doing so living in nursing homes and extended care facilities. Often dealing with chronic illnesses that compromise their ability to live the last years with zest.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article concerning a study of patients with abnormal heartbeats. The study re-analyzed a past trial of people with atrial fibrulation who had a high risk of stroke and were treated with drug combinations. Researchers found that those with atrial fibrulation two thirds had been prescribed digoxin a drug used to control abnormal heart rates either before or during the the 3.5 year study. Also finding that those prescribed digoxin were 41% more likely to die of any cause and 61% more likely to die from a heart rhythm problem.
