Dr. Wallach starts todays show discussing statistics regarding medical mistakes. Citing CDC data that states 15,000 Medicare patients die in hospital settings each month. Also citing a report in the Journal of the American Medical Association that states over 15 million patients are killed, injured or infected every year. Doc asks the question "would people still fly on airlines if 15 million were harmed every year"?
Pearls of Wisdom
Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article regarding a study on drug side effects. The study published in the journal Nature used a computer model to try and identify side effects in 656 commonly prescribed drugs. The hope is to use this computer model on new drug compounds to determine the side effects and whether it would be cost effective to continue with clinical trials. The model was able to predict side effects about half of the time.
