Dr. Peter Glidden fills in for Dr. Joel Wallach starting the show discussing a recent study on CT scans. The study published in the Journal Lancet and conducted by the National Cancer Institute found an increased risk of brain cancer and leukemia associated with CT scans.

The study of more than 355,000 children and teens found those exposed to 60 milligrays (cumulative dose of two CT scans) were three times as likely to develop brain tumors with ten years. Researchers also found those children and teens exposed to 50 milligrays were three times more likely to develop leukemia.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Glidden discuss a news article concerning a study on kidney stones in children and teens. Researchers from the Mayo Clinic analyzed data from all healthcare providers in Olmstead County, Minnesota and found an increase in kidney stones from 1984 to 2008 in kids ages 12 to 17. They couldn't explain the increase but specualted it could be more smaller kidney stones were located because of an increased use of CT scans giving better imaging than older technologies.
