Monologue

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing cystic fibrosis. Outlining how in the 1970s he discovered that CF is caused by nutritional deficiencies. Also explaining that when he presented his finding to his employers at the Yerkes Primate Institute he was summarily fired. The reason he was fired was that the intitute had just been awarded a several million dollar grant to study CF.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article regarding a study on hospital charges. The study looked at over 19,000 patients that had appendectomies in 2009 in the state of California. Researchers found that costs ranged from $1500 to one extreme case of $182,955. A previous study in 2007 found huge differences in prices of hysterectomies, gall bladder removals and colonoscopy screenings.
