Dr. Wallach starts todays show with a different take on the old "physician heal thy self" phrase. Saying "patient heal thy self" alluding to the idea that patients should educate themselves. In this way patients could avoid costly office visits and time consuming trips to the ER. Doc outlines several of his books that aid in a patients ability to treat themselves for minor ailments and tests.
Pearls of Wisdom
Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a recent study done at the University of Nebraska. The study examined to major national studies regarding patients visits to doctors and the recommendations for both acute and chronic sinus problems. The study found that for acute sinusitis antibiotics were prescribed 80% of the time and for chronic sinusitis patients were prescribed antibiotics 72% of the time. The only problem is that antibiotics don't affect viruses that are the majority of the cause of rhinosinusitis.
