A CYCLIST WAS STRUCK AND KILLED BY AN OUT-OF-CONTROL VEHICLE ON SATURDAY. THE ACCIDENT HAPPENED ON HIGHWAY ONE ABOUT A MILE NORTH OF THE SANTA CRUZ COUNTY LANDFILL. THREE CYCLISTS WERE RIDING ALONG WITH THE VICTIM WHEN HE WAS STRUCK BY NORTH-BOUND TESLA. THE DRIVER OF THE TESLA SWERVED INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC ON THE TWO-LANE SECTION OF ROAD, AND TO AVOID A COLLISION WITH ANOTHER VEHICLE, WENT UP A DIRT EMBANKMENT AND STRUCK THE CYCLIST AS THE CAR CAME BACK DOWN TO THE SURFACE. ONE CYCLIST ALLEGEDLY SAW THE DRIVER OF THE TESLA GETTING OUT OF HIS CAR HOLDING A CELL PHONE. C-H-P SAID THE CYCLIST MAY HAVE DIED INSTANTLY AS HE STRUCK THE WINDSHIELD OF THE CAR, SHATTERING THE WINDSHIELD AND DAMAGING HIS NECK. C-H-P ALSO REPORTS THAT THE DRIVER OF THE TESLA, A 60 YEAR OLD SANTA CRUZ MAN, IS BEING COOPERATIVE WITH INVESTIGATORS.
