The Dungeness Crab season will end early this year due to concerns about the safety of the critically endangered leatherback sea turtles and humpback whales. That’s because of the risk of those turtles and whales getting entangled in the crabbing lines as they come in closer to shore to catch and eat anchovies, because the krill (which are their first choice in food) are dying off (reportedly due to the warmer ocean water depleting the nutrients there). Crab season is now scheduled to end June 1st.
The Central Coast Fish and Wildlife’s Zone 7, runs roughly from Point Arena to Monterey.
