Monologue

Dr. Wallach starts the show today discussing a news story on the eating disorder "Pica". Where people have a odd craving for non-food items. The story certered around a young girl who had to be hospitalized after eating a light bulb. The story contended that Pica is a rare disorder however Dr. Wallach disagrees. Asserting that people who binge eat food items such as chips and junk food actually have a form of Pica.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news story concerning a report from the American Academy of Pediatrics. The report is a widening of the guidelines for ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). Previously the guidelines targeted children ages 6 to 12 now under the new guidelines children ages 4 to 18 are targeted. The report also recommends drugs if behavioral interventions don't show improvement.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing gluten intolerance. Commenting that gluten is found in many products often not even called wheat but sometimes listed as "natural flavorings" or "hydrolized vegatable protein". Suggesting that if a product is in question people should call the 800 number usually listed on products.

 

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article concerning a couple whose infant was taken by CPS (child protective services). The couple took their baby to Sutter Memorial Hospital with flu like symptoms. After witnessing a nurse give the child antibiotics without a doctor ordering them. The doctors told the couple the baby needed immediate open heart surgery. Not comfortable with the diagnosis the couple took their child from that hospital to a Kaiser facility without properly checking out from Sutter. While a Kaiser police arrived after called by Sutter doctors. After seeing the child was ok and in good hands they left. A day after coming home from the hospital police arrived a the couples home with CPS in tow. Entered the home without a warrant and forcibly took the baby out of the mother's arms and CPS took the baby back to Sutter.
