Pharmacist Ben Fuchs fills in for Dr. Wallach.  Ben starts the show discussing a recent story regarding deep fried "Coca Cola".  Outlining the various health problems associated with drinking coke much less frying.

Doug Winfrey and Ben Fuchs discuss a couple of news stories.  The first concerns the Walt Disney Co. and a recent move to lower fat and sugar contents in packaged foods that carry the images of Mickey and friends.  Next Doug and Ben discuss a study done by the National Institute of Mental Health concerning the side effects of Ritalin on children under the age of 6.  The drugs have only been approved for children 6 or older and the study was conducted by researchers with financial ties to the makers of these psychiatric drugs.

Doug Winfrey and Ben Fuchs discuss a news article concerning flu vaccines.  Apparently, in Maryland and other state health officials are trying "drive-thru" vaccine stations.  Recommending the shots for the elderly and children as well as people with depressed immune systems.

Dr. Wallach discusses a recent report regarding the worlds tallest people.  The report states that the Dutch are the tallest people on average in the world.  Previously the U.S. held that ranking until the 1970s when the Dutch started to pass us.  Doc attributes the change to mineral deficiencies in the American people.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a couple of recent news articles.  The first concerns former FDA chairman Lester Crawford who is pleading guilty to conflict of interest and making false financial statements.  While chairing the FDA Crawford wrote that he had sold shares of Pepsico Inc., Sysco Corp. (food product manufacturor) and Embrex Inc. (agriculture biotech company).  In fact he was actually on the board of directors for Embrex.  Doug also discusses another story about a new stomach banding proceedure that will be easier and less expensive.

Doug Winfrey and Joanne Conaway discuss a recent government report says that the benefits of seafood outweigh the risks.  The risks being the toxins such as mercury found in a lot of fish these days.  The benefits being the omega 3 fatty acids found in many popular fishes.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss several recent news articles.  The first concerns a research done at Johns Hopkins University that found a compound in red wine help prevent brain damage following a stroke.  Next they discuss a FDA warning about counterfeit diabetes test stripes.  Apparently there are strips sold in several states that can give inaccurate results.  The strips a sold to use with various models of LifeScan Inc. One Touch made by Johnson & Johnson.  The bogus strips have been sold under the brand of One Touch Basic Profile lot numbers 272894A, 2619932 or 2606340 with English, Greek and Portuguese on the carton.  Also sold under the name One Touch Ultra lot number 2691191 with English and French on the carton.  Finally Doug discusses a poll taken by ABC News, the Kaiser Family Foundation and USA Today.  The poll surveyed thousands of people across the nation about the state of our health care industry.
