Monologue

Dr. Wallach begins the show discussing health issues concerning children.  Stating that from the 1970's until 2000 most questions concerning children revolved around ADD and ADHD.  Now most the questions he gets are in regards to autism.  Doc then outlines the two types of autism and the causes.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss two recent health news stories.  The first concerns a hospital in New Mexico that is about to be fined by the government on five counts of illegally dumping hazardous medical waste in a land fill.  The second story concerns a report from a non-profit group that outlines 5 ways lives can be saved by taking preventative measures.

Pharmacist Ben Fuchs fills in for Dr. Wallach.  Ben starts the show discussing mineral deficiencies.  Asserting that 90% of Americans are deficient in chromium and vanadium.  The trace minerals are important in the human body's ability to control blood sugar levels.

Doug Winfrey and Ben Fuchs discuss a news story about a chain of grocery stores that are now filling prescriptions for certain antibiotics for free.  Publix grocery store pharmacies are joining Walmart and Meijer stores in providing antibiotics for free.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a couple of recent news stories.  The first concerns a doctor who called in a bomb threat to get a plane he had missed to return to the airport.  The second story concerns a repiratory therapist who has been accused of molesting children under his care.

Dr. Wallach discusses a recent study that indicates our children and grandchildren won't live as long as us.  The study found that of the children with the metabolic syndrome 1 out of 5 will die from stroke or heart attach in their 30's and 40's.  This compared to the norm which is one out of every sixty seven.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a couple of news articles.  The first concerns a statistics released by the Japanese government found that Japanese girls born last can expect to live to be 85.8 years old.  While men from Iceland will live the longest among men at an average of 79.4 years.  The second article concerns a study that found a more costly and less effective in vitro fertilization treatment has increased in use by 47%.

Nurse Joanne Conaway fills in for Dr. Wallach.  Joanne starts the show discussing genetically modified foods.  Asserting that most of are getting much more of these foods in our diets than we realize.  Contending that most pre-processed foods contain genetically modified foods mostly in the form of high fructose corn syrup.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Joanne Conaway discuss a couple of recent news stories.  The first conerns a FDA panel discision to leave the diabetes drug Avandia on the market.  Despite the fact that FDA advisor Dr. David Graham cited studies that indicate patients using Avandia have an increased risk of heart attack.  Next Doug and Joanne discuss a study that found 81% of children and teens who went to a doctor because of sleeping problems walked away with a prescription.  With all of the prescriptions being for drugs not approved by the FDA for use by children.
