Monologue

Dr. Wallach just back from continuing education to maintain his medical license relates a conversation with a medical doctor.  The doctor was exclaiming that the medical industry was in a poor state because the government announced that Medicare will no longer pay to correct medical mistakes.  Doc applaudes this decision contending that is something he has been wanting for 43 years.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a recent news article concerning maternal death rates.  The article states that in 2003 the maternal death rates rose above 10 per 100,000 births since 1977.  Experts are blaming maternal obesity and an increase in Caesarean sections.  Twenty nine percent of all births in the U.S. last year were by C-section.

Pharmacist Benjamin Fuchs fills in for Dr. Wallach. Ben starts the show discussing blood sugar issues. Outlining the importance of chromium and vanadium in stabalizing blood sugar in the body.

Doug Winfrey and Ben Fuchs discuss a recent research study from the University of California at Irvine. The study found that mice given a diet supplemented with DHA (docosahexaenoic acid had lower levels of beta amyloid proteins usually associated with Alzheimer's lesions.

Nurse Joanne Conaway fills in for Dr. Wallach.  Joanne starts the show talking about a move start pasteurizing almonds rather than allowing them to be eaten raw.  Joanne contends that this process will kill off all of the good nutrients in the nuts.  This whole issue the result of 5 deaths from salmonella.  She comments that although the deaths are unfortunate pharmaceutical drugs kill thousands each year and they are still on the market.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Joanne Conaway discuss a recent research study that found caffeine from coffee and tea helped older women maintain mental acuity but the same result did not hold true for men.  In the study the women who drank three cups or more daily of coffee or tea were less likely to suffer a decline in verbal skills compared to those who drank a cup or less.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing the government's announcement that Medicare will no longer pay for medical mistakes.  Under federal law the hospitals will have to pay for the mistakes and cannot pass the cost along to the patient.  Doc asserts that every American should educate themselves and become their own "health advocate".

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discusses two recent news articles concerning viruses.  The first article concerns research that is attempting to link obesity to a virus called "adenovirus 36".  The virus is in the same family of viruses that cause colds and pink eye in humans.  The second article is regarding research involving the H5N1 avian flu virus.  The researchers have been examining the avian flu virus looking for specific mutations that a virus needs in order to become a pandemic.  They have determined that at least 13 of these changes will need to occur to make the virus deadly.  So far in human cases studied the virus has only made two or three of these changes.
