Monologue

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing the life expectancy of doctors.  According to the AMA doctors live to an average age of 56 while their patients average age is now up to age 76.  With the doctors dying from the same disease states they are trying to cure in their patients.  Doc recommends that people educate themselves and become their own "health advocate".

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss three different stories involving doctors in the news.  Doctors in New Zealand lost a man's dentures during a back operation only to find the teeth lodged in his throat 4 days after the surgery.  A doctor in California has been reprimanded for implanting silicone breast in 4 women before the implants were approved by the FDA.  A Nevada doctors was also reprimanded for failing to diagnosed colon cancer in a patient that later died of the disease.

Dr. Wallach starts today's show discussing medical mistakes and the misdiagnosis of many diseases.  Asserting that people should educate themselves and become their own health advocate.  Also recommending getting second opinions on any major diagnosis.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss two recent news articles the first concerns the misdiagnosis of breast cancer in a New York woman.  The woman was told she had breast cancer and underwent a radical double mastectomy.  She later found out that she never had cancer and her biopsy had been mislabeled.

Pharmacist Ben Fuchs fills in for Dr. Wallach. Ben starts the show discussing HRT (hormone replacement therapy) asserting that there are better ways to control the symptoms of menopause. Contending that estrogen creates stress in the body while progesteron relaxes the body.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Ben Fuchs discuss a recently released survey from the International Food Information Council Foundation. The survey indicated several "diet disconnects" as an example 90% of Americans say breakfast is an important part of a healthy diet, only 49% actually ate breakfast on a daily basis.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing the high cost of health care in America.  Asserting that this high cost of medical is forcing companies out of the U.S. to other countries such as India and Pakistan.  Recommending that people educate themselves about their own health so they won't need the medical industry.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a recent news article regarding a report on the economic impact of health care in the U.S.   The report by the Milken Institute found that common chronic health conditions cost the U.S. economy more that $1 trillion dollars every year.  This due to the high cost of health care combined with others expenses such as lost productivity.  The total economic cost could reach $6 trillion by the year 2050 if nothing is done to stem the tide.
