Pharmacist Ben Fuchs fills in for Dr. Wallach. Ben discusses acid reflux and heartburn in relationship to low acid levels in the digestive system. Contending that most Americans have poor digestion especially the elderly. As we age our ability to digest fats and proteins decreases.

Pearls of Wisdom

Ben and Doug discuss a recent research study published in the journal Thorax. Researchers have found a link between symptomatic asthma and lower levels of vitamin C in the blood stream. In the study those with higher consumption of foods high in vitamin C were half as likely to have asthma symptoms.

Dr. Wallach suggests giving loved ones a Youngevity business for a Christmas gift.  Mentioning Youngevity's aqquisition of the "Tidal Wave" nutrient company.  Also suggesting the essential oils as stocking stuffers.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss two recent news stories.  The first concerns bacterical infections killing infants at the White Memorial Medical Center.  Several infants contracted Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria from unclean medical insturments.  The second story concerns new warnings from the FDA concerning over-the-counter pain killers including aspirin, acetaminophen and ibuprofen.

Dr. Wallach talks about the fact that many people gain weight over the holiday season.  Often people then make a New Years resolution to lose the weight they gained in the new year.  Dr. Wallach recommends several of the Youngevity weight loss products to help people keep their resolution a reality.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a recent news story concerning a drug wholesaler and a drug information company.  Suits have been filed against both McKesson Corporation and First DataBank Inc. accusing the companies of price fixing.  Although the alledged price fixing would not have benefitted the two financially it would have benefitted their customers. The Prescription Access Litigation Project who filed the suits contends if the suits are settled it could save consumers and taxpayers $4 billion the first year.

Doug Winfrey and JoAnne Conaway discuss a recent news story regarding a reduction in breast cancer.  Cancer experts have seen a  7% drop in breast cancer rates between 2002 and 2003.  Many believe it is because millions of woman have stopped taking HRT.  Which was linked to an increased risk of breast cancer in the Women's Health Initiative study.

Nurse JoAnne Conaway fills in for Dr. Wallach.  JoAnne starts the show discussing hospital contracted infections.  Outlining that according to the CDC 90,000 Americans die anually from these infections.  Noting that most of the infections are passed on from surfaces such as TV remotes, phones, door knobs, table tops etc.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and JoAnne Conaway discuss a recent news article regarding vaccines and school children.  A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that children who were vaccinated as part of a school program had fewer flu symptoms, less doctor visits and used less medications than children who did not get the vaccine.

Nurse JoAnne Conaway fills in for Dr. Wallach.  JoAnne discusses a news story regarding the halting of a heart drug trial.  The trial was stopped after it became known that the drug increased the risk for fatal heart attacks and some participants died.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and JoAnne Conaway discuss a news story concerning new FDA guidelines on the antidepressant Paxil.  Earlier this year the label was amended to warn of suicidal thoughts in children and adolescents taking the drug.  Now the FDA is considering amending the "black box" warning to patients up to age 24.  As well as recommending all patients regardless of age be monitored especially when starting the drug.
