POST-EASTER BUNNIES- 04-24-14 9:30 SG

SANTA CRUZ SHELTERS HAVE BEEN RECEIVING DOZENS OF UNWANTED BUNNIES AFTER THE EASTER HOLIDAY.     ONE-HUNDRED-PLUS RABBITS ARE EXPECTED TO BE SURRENDERED IN THE NEXT FEW MONTHS.     RESIDENTS BUY BUNNIES AS A NOVELTY TO MARK THE HOLIDAY, BUT ARE UNABLE TO CARE FOR THEM AFTERWARDS.    SOME OF THE RESCUED RABBITS WERE INJURED DURING CELEBRATIONS.   ONE SANTA CRUZ SHELTER RECEIVED MORE THAN SIX-HUNDRED-FIFTY BUNNIES LAST EASTER.

KING CITY POCKET PARK- 04-24-14 9:00 SG

KING CITY WILL BE HOLDING A GROUND-BREAKING CEREMONY FOR A NEW PARK.    THE POCKET PARK AT THE CORNER OF BEECH AND KING STREETS WILL INCLUDE A NEW PLAYGROUND, A PICNIC AREA, AND A SPORTS COURT.     THE CEREMONY WILL BE HELD AT THE FUTURE PARK’S SITE, MONDAY, APRIL 28TH, AT 3 P-M.

COWELL BEACH IMPROVEMENT- 04-24-14 8:00 SG

THE STATE WATER BOARD HAS APPROVED PROJECTS THAT WILL IMPROVE A SANTA CRUZ BEACH.    THE TWO PROJECTS HAVE RECEIVED FUNDING FROM THE CLEAN BEACHES INITIATIVE GRANT PROGRAM TO ADDRESS COWELL BEACH’S POOR WATER QUALITY.     ADJUSTMENTS WILL BE MADE AT THE NEARBY NEARY LAGOON, TO ELIMINATE CONTAMINATION.    THE FIRST PROJECT WILL IMPROVE THE AREA’S STORM DRAINAGE FACILITIES.    THE SECOND WILL REPAIR A SEWER PIPELINE THAT TRAVELS UNDERNEATH THE LAGOON TO A WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT NEAR THE BEACH.

PRUNEDALE FIRE- 04-24-14 7:00 SG

FIVE FAMILIES HAVE BEEN DISPLACED AFTER AN APARTMENT FIRE IN PRUNEDALE.   MONTEREY COUNTY FIRE CREWS ARRIVED AT THE COMPLEX ON PESANTE ROAD LAST (WED) NIGHT AFTER REPORTS OF A FIRE JUST AFTER 10 P-M.    OFFICIALS SAY THE FIRE STARTED IN ONE APARTMENTS’ GARAGE AND WAS FOLLOWED BY SEVERAL EXPLOSIONS.    CREWS CONTAINED THE BLAZE BY AROUND 11 P-M.    NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED.

HOLLISTER QUICK STOP ATTACKERS- 04-24-14 7:30 SG

HOLLISTER POLICE HAVE ARRESTED A MAN AND A WOMAN IN CONNECTION WITH A RECENT ATTACK AT A MARKET.    20-YEAR-OLD EDDIE DEGRACIA AND 23-YEAR-OLD DESIREE ROJAS ARE SUSPECTED OF BEING INVOLVED IN THE ASSAULT OF A HOLLISTER RESIDENT IN A QUICK STOP MARKET ON APRIL 17TH.    BOTH WERE BOOKED INTO COUNTY JAIL AFTER AN OFFICER SPOTTED DEGRACIA ON SAN BENITO STREET WALKING BACK TO HIS HOME, WHERE ROJAS WAS FOUND LATER.    HOLLISTER POLICE ARE STILL LOOKING FOR THE THIRD SUSPECT, 20-YEAR-OLD ANTHONY SAMUEL VILLAREAL, WHO HAS BEEN DESCRIBED AS 5-FEET TALL, 110-POUNDS, WITH BLACK HAIR AND BROWN EYES.
