A WATSONVILLE MAN HAS BEEN ARRESTED AFTER DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE AND LEADING POLICE ON A PURSUIT. OFFICERS SPOTTED 26-YEAR-OLD BERNARDO MEDINA-GARCIA DRIVING ERRATICALLY NEAR PORTER DRIVE AND SAN JUAN ROAD SHORTLY BEFORE 9 P-M YESTERDAY (THUR).   MEDINA NEARLY COLLIDED WITH SEVERAL CARS AS HE LED POLICE ON A CHASE THROUGH THE CITY.   THE SUSPECT DEAD-ENDED IN A PARKING LOT ON LAS LOMAS DRIVE.   MEDINA AND TWO PASSENGERS GOT OUT OF THE VEHICLE.    THE THREE MEN, IDENTIFIED AS NORTENO GANG MEMBERS, WERE ARRESTED ON VARIOUS CHARGES INCLUDING VIOLATION OF PROBATION AND D-U-I.

USLAR HAS BEEN WITH THE CITY FOR 17 YEARS, PREVIOUSLY SERVING AS MANAGEMENT ANALYST, DIRECTOR OF PLANS AND PUBLIC WORKS, AND DEPUTY CITY MANAGER.

THE NUMBER OF CALIFORNIANS WHO ENROLLED FOR HEALTH INSURANCE HAS EXCEEDED PROJECTIONS.   IN AN ANNOUNCEMENT MADE YESTERDAY (THURS),                                 1-POINT-4-MILLION SIGN-UPS BY TUESDAY’S DEADLINE SURPASSED ORIGINAL PROJECTIONS BY ALMOST ONE-HUNDRED-THOUSAND ENROLLEES.    OVER 85-PERCENT OF THOSE CALIFORNIANS ARE ELIGIBLE FOR REDUCTIONS TO THEIR MONTHLY PREMIUMS.    COVERED CALIFORNIA EXTENDED ENROLLMENT FOR TWO WEEKS BEYOND ITS ORIGINAL MARCH 31ST DEADLINE AFTER ITS WEBSITE AND CENTERS WERE OVERWHELMED WITH PEOPLE RUSHING TO SIGN-UP LAST MINUTE.

PINTO LAKE GRANT-4/17/14-2243-PMD

THE STATE WATER RESOURCES CONTROL BOARD WILL BE ADMINISTERING A 750-THOUSAND DOLLAR FEDERAL GRANT.   THE GRANT IS TO BE USED TO RID PINTO LAKE OF THE TOXIC BLUE GREEN ALGAE BLOOM KNOWN AS CYANOBACTERIA.  1ST A 12-THOUSAND DOLLAR GRANT WILL BE USED TO ELECTRO-FISH  THE CARP FROM THE LAKE.  CARP STIR UP SEDIMENT LADEN WITH FERTILIZER RUN-OFF WHICH FEEDS THE ALGAE.  IN JUNE OF 2015 THE FEDERAL MONIES WILL BE USE TO FORM A CHEMICAL BARRIER OVER THE SEDIMENT TO CONTROL THE CYANOBACTERIA, WHICH WHEN UNCONTROLLED MAKES ITS WAY TO THE SEA AND IS LINKED TO SEA OTTER POISONINGS.
