Dr. Joel Wallach

A biomedical research pioneer, Dr. Joel D. Wallach spent more than 40 years in the field of Veterinary Medicine, observing and researching the effects of individual nutrients on animal health, before becoming a Naturopathic Physician in 1982. Today, Dr. Wallach is renowned for his groundbreaking research on the health benefits of selenium and other minerals. He currently dedicates his time to lecturing throughout the world on the therapeutic benefits of vitamins and minerals, and on lobbying the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on behalf of the dietary supplement industry.

Dr. Wallach has been appearing recently with George Noory on Coast to Coast AM.

Monologue

Dr. Joel Wallach begins the show discussing epigenetics. Citing a study that he was involved with concerning the diet of ducks. He collected the eggs from a single pair of ducks and froze them until he had 100. Then the eggs were thawed and incubated. Once the ducks hatched they were divided into four groups and fed four different diets. The ducks that were fed duck pellets and barley grass were five times larger than ducks fed only barley grass.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a report out from the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College. The report states that U.S. women don't live as long as women from other wealthy nations. In 1960 American women were among longest living women in the world. In the 1980s that trend reversed and now American women die two and a half years earlier than women from other developed nations. Researchers believe this is due to smoking and obesity.

Citing several of the tax benefits in the form of write offs that people can use to keep more of their earnings.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article about a fertility doctor. The doctor Donald Cline now retired is accused of using his own sperm to impregnate patients. The children now adults contend that DNA tests show he may be the father of at least 20 others. However in the state of Indiana law doesn't specifically prohibit fertility doctors from using their own sperm. He was convicted on two counts of obstruction of justice. But the judge suspended the sentence of three years.

Dr. Joel Wallach begins the show discussing the dying oceans. Stating that when the major rivers around the world were dammed to create electricity. The silt that used to flow into the oceans is stopped. That silt contained nutrients that fed plankton and now without it they are dying off. Now coral reefs are dying as well and on up the food chain.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article about a report out from the United Health Foundation. The report lists the healthiest and least healthy states in the U.S. The group looked at 35 different factors affecting people's health. These included rates of smoking, obesity, physical inactivity, low birth weight, drug deaths, environmental conditions like air pollution, and the number of doctors, dentists and mental health providers per 100,000 people. The healthiest state was Massachusetts with the least healthiest state was Georgia.

Researchers looked at data of over 400,000 finding that nearly 3000 had been diagnosed with nontuberculosis mycobacterial pulmonary disease and over 300 diagnosed with tuberculosis. Then looked to see if any of these patients were using a steroid inhaler. Discovering that those using the inhaler were twice as likely to be diagnosed with nontuberculosis mycobacterial lung disease.

Researchers in the UK looked at data from some 95 studies including over two million people. Finding that eating 10 servings of fruits and vegetables daily reduced the risk death from all causes. To a lesser degree the benefit was seen in eating just 200 grams of fruits and vegetables daily.
