Gilroy police have identified a suspect wanted for murder. Investigators allege 20 year old Jay Robert Vasquez is responsible for the shooting death of 32 year old Jason Contreras on November 29th. The fatal shooting took place on the 7500 block of Alexander Street and is believed to be gang related.


 

A Salinas man was arrested after a brief stand off on Friday. Shortly after 4 p.m. patrol units responded to a trailer park on the 300 block of Williams Road to investigate reports of a domestic disturbance between an adult male and his mother. Officers surrounded the trailer, the suspect was arrested without incident at about 5 pm.

Watsonville police are investigating firearms recovered during a car pursuit. At 10 p.m. on Friday, a patrol unit attempted to stop a speeding vehicle on West Beach and Lee Road. The suspect vehicle, a 1993 Lexus sedan, sped off and a pursuit ensued to southbound Highway 1, where several items were thrown frown from the car. The chase was ended due to concerns for public safety. A pistol and assault rifle were recovered from the roadway.

A new communications tower is being planned for north Santa Cruz county. Officials say the new cell tower is needed for police and 9-1-1 communications due to frequent failures of the current aged system. The new communications system is scheduled for construction in spring on the CEMEX property near Davenport. The project is expected to be complete in the summer of 2018.

 

 

 

The Monterey County Sheriff’s office is looking for a suspect who evaded arrest on Friday. 20 year old Desmond Hatton was able to get away from deputies following a traffic stop in Castroville. An assault rifle, a semi automatic pistol and drugs were found in the car. Hatton is considered armed and dangerous. Anyone with any information on his whereabouts is encouraged to contact authorities.

Watsonville police are investigating a stabbing that took place during a Friday morning carjacking. Shortly before 6:30 a.m. two men, thought to be in their 20’s forced a man into his U-Haul rental on the 2000 block of Freedom Boulevard. The suspects drove the victim to the 300 block of Green valley Road where they robbed and stabbed him and made off with the U-Haul. The victim is in stable condition at an area hospital.  Anyone with information is encouraged to contact authorities.

 

(12:30) Ben Lomond- The Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office has identified the man shot and killed in self defense by his father on Sunday. 30-year-old Richard Oates Jr. died on the scene of his Ben Lomond home after authorities responded to a report of a gun shoot wound at approximately 4:30 p.m. in the 100 block of Ridge Road. The homicide is currently under investigation and no arrests have been made. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

(09:00) Monterey - The Monterey Police Department announced they are joining the International Association Chiefs of Police “One Mind Campaign”. The One Mind Campaign seeks to ensure successful interactions between police officers and persons with mental illness. The Monterey Police Department is committed to implementing 4 promising practices over a 12–36 month timeframe.  The 4 strategies include: Establishing a clearly defined and sustainable partnership with one or more community mental health organizations; Developing and implementing a model policy addressing police response to persons affected by mental illness; Providing Crisis Intervention Team training to a minimum of 20 percent of the agency’s sworn officers; and training and certifying 100 percent of the agency’s sworn officers in Mental Health First Aid for Public Safety.
