DESPITE PROVIDING FREE CLEAN-UP BAGS FOR DOG OWNERS, CARMEL BEACH IS EXPERIENCING A DOG-WASTE LITTER PROBLEM. ACCORDING TO OFFICIALS, THE FREE BAGS ARE BEING USED, BUT THEN DISCARDED IN THE BUSHES OR SIMPLY LEFT ON THE BEACH, WHICH END UP IN THE SURF. THE CARMEL CITY COUNCIL IS CONSIDERING CHANGING THE COLOR OF THE “MUTT MITT” CLEAN-UP BAGS TO HOT PINK TO GIVE MORE VISIBILITY TO THE DROPPED BAGS AND HOPEFULLY ENCOURAGE DOG OWNERS TO THROW THE BAGS AWAY IN APPROPRIATE TRASH RECEPTACLES.

3,800 Acre Sand Fire – Amador County - 07/28/14 11:22 S.S.

The Sand Fire, that started in Amador County around 4:30 p-m Friday, is considered to be 65 percent contained. So far it has destroyed 13 homes and 38 outbuildings, and 515 structures are still threatened. Some evacuations are still in place, although others have been lifted. This wildfire is believed to have been caused by a vehicle driving on dry vegetation. Nearly 2 thousand firefighters are working to contain this fire, and they expect to have full containment by Friday.

LOCAL THEATER RECEIVES GRANT - 07/25/14 10:28 S.S.

A LOCAL THEATER HAS RECEIVED A 2-YEAR GRANT. THE 90 THOUSAND DOLLAR GRANT COMES FROM THE WILLIAM AND FLORA HEWLETT FOUNDATION; AND WILL BE USED TO SUPPORT THE WESTERN STAGE THEATER AT HARTNELL COLLEGE IN SALINAS. THE WESTERN STAGE WAS FOUNDED BACK IN 1974, AND THEY’LL BE PERFORMING WEST SIDE STORY FROM AUGUST 9TH THROUGH 30TH.

Pinnacles price increase - 07/21/14 10:21 S.S.

The cost of a Day Entrance Pass to Pinnacles National Park is about to double. The entrance fee will go from 5 to 10 dollars on August 1st. Park officials say the increased income will be used to provide better customer service. The National Park Service reported that nearly 238 thousand people visited the new National Park last year….and they spent more than 13 million dollars in nearby communities.

SAFEWAY SHAREHOLDERS HAVE APPROVED THE SALE OF SAFEWAY STORES TO ALBERTSONS. THAT WOULD CREATE A NETWORK OF ABOUT 2 THOUSAND STORES AROUND THE U.S…..AND THAT’S JUST SLIGHTLY SMALLER THAN THE KROGER’S GROCERY STORE CHAIN. THE DEAL STILL NEEDS TO BE APPROVED BY THE FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION. IF ANY STORES CLOSE AS THE RESULT OF THIS SALE, THEY ARE LIKELY TO BE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA.
