California attorney general Xavier Becerra has requested that an appeals court block a southern California judges decision to overturn California’s End Of Life Option Act. Becerra requested an immediate “Stay”, and the “Reversal of last week’s ruling”, so that people who are within their final 6 months of life can ask for, and get, life-ending medication if they so choose.
The cause of last night’s fatal accident in the Royal Oaks area of north Monterey county is still being investigated. A 56 year-old Royal Oaks man died after his motorcycle hit a utility pole around 6:30 p-m on eastbound Lewis Road, east of Vega Road. Although the motorcyclist was transported to an area hospital, he succumbed to his injuries a short time later.
The Salinas woman who pleaded guilty to torturing her 2 nieces and nephew, and killing the younger 2, has been moved to the state woman’s prison in Chowchilla. Tami Hunstman has been sentenced to spend 2 terms of life in prison Without The Possibility Of Parole, as well as 3 more Life Terms plus an extra 9 years for torturing her nieces and nephew.
That after Huntsman pleaded guilty to 8 charges after the younger children’s bodies were found in a Redding storage facility, while the surviving victim was found in Huntsman’s care in Plumas county.
More than an acre of Opium poppy plants have been seized from a property in Aromas. This was the second field of Opium plants found in north Monterey county in the last 2 weeks. The first one was found in Moss Landing. No arrests have been made in either case…..yet.
The people running a “Controlled Burn” this afternoon, near the intersection of Valencia School Road and Fern Flat Road are likely to be in trouble as the Backyard Burn Season in that area is long over. The Backyard Burn Season in Santa Cruz County traditionally ends every year at the end of April.
A 29 year-old passenger, who was not wearing his seatbelt, died in a solo vehicle accident early this morning. The 18 year-old driver sustained minor injuries when he lost control of the vehicle on Southbound Highway 1, and it went down a steep embankment north of Mar Monte Avenue. The passenger, who was ejected from the vehicle, was declared dead at the scene, and the driver was transported to Watsonville Community Hospital. Fatigue is reported to have played a part in the just-before-3 a.m. accident.
A woman who was shot three times while driving a patrol car a Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s deputy is expected to be arraigned today on charges of attempted murder. Jessica Lowe, 27, was in handcuffs in the back of a patrol car early Friday morning when she slipped out of her handcuffs, opened the door through an open window and entered the driver side of the patrol car and drove the vehicles at a deputy. The Sheriff’s Office is also expected to release body camera footage later this afternoon.
The number of balloons polluting the Monterey Bay waters have been on the rise in recent weeks. Conservation groups say the increase is typical in the aftermath of graduation season and Mother’s Day. Ocean animals can eat the balloons and become sick, according to environmental advocates.
