Dr. Wallach discusses a recent news story  concerning Kentucky Fried Chicken.  The company has announced that it is reducing and eliminating trans fats from all of their products.  A move that New York City restauranteurs are also considering.  Doc also mentions another story concerning the avian flu.  Experts believe that the avian flu has mutated and is spreading across Asia and China.  They also believe the cause is the vaccine they developed for the flu.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a recent study on hand washing in hospitals.  The study found that nurses and aides were much better at washing their hands in instances where the should than doctors.  One study had doctors report on their own hand washing which the doctors estimated at 73% nearly three quarters of the time.  The same doctors were observed and the actually only washed their hands 9% of the time.

Nurse Joanne Conaway fills in for Dr. Wallach.  Joanne discusses a recent study that found eating several servings of vegatables daily were linked to slower cognitive decline.  The same did not hold true for fruits in the same study.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Joanne Conaway discuss a couple of recent news articles.  The first concerns an FDA warning on decorative contact lenses.  Warning consumers that there are reports of people contracting conjunctivitis, corneal ulcers, corneal abrasions and vision impairment and blindness.  Next they discuss a news story regarding the healthy compounds found in pumpkins.

Pharmacist Ben Fuchs fills in for Dr. Wallach.  Ben starts the show discussing the various forms of acne and the causes.  Asserting that their are 7 different types of acne or causes such as adrenal, liver, kidney, thyroid, male hormone, premenstral and menopause.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Ben Fuchs discuss a recent news article.  The article concerns a warning put out by drug manufacturor Wyeth and the FDA.  The warning is to doctors recommending they limit the number of Effexor pill they prescribe to patients.  Warning doctors about possible overdoses as several deaths and injuries have already been reported.

Doug and Ben discuss a Dutch study that compared meals from a couple fast food companies and the differences in trans fat contents. Ben outlines the negative effects of diets high in trans fats.

Nurse Joanne Conaway fills in for Dr. Wallach.  Joanne begins the show outlining her medical background.  She also discusses the importance of antioxidants specifically  reveratol found in grape skins and seeds.  Discussing a recent research study that found resveratol actually inhibits cancer cell growth.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Joanne Conaway discuss a couple of news articles concerning vaccines.  Doug outlines a government study that contends vaccines have "almost" no side effects that require medical treatment.  Howvever, nearly half of those who co-wrote the study had financial ties to companies that make vaccines.  Next they discuss the recent FDA rejection of a petition to remove thimerosal from vaccines.  Thimerosal is a preservative that is nearly 50% by weight mercury.

Dr. Wallach discusses a couple of recent news stories.  The first concerns a European study that found heart attack patients given prescription fish oils with omega 3 fatty acids faired better than those not given the fish oil.  Doc also discusses a study that linked the consumption vegatables to a 40% less risk of cognitive decline in those suffering from dementia.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a recent news article concerning the CDC's advisory to hospitlals regarding drug resistant "superbugs".  The CDC  is advising hopitals, nursing homes and long term care facilities to use standard infection control practices and guidelines in the proper use of antibiotics.
