(07:45) Salinas - A witness has come forward in connection with the hit-and-run that took place on Monday on W. Laurel Dr. and Legion, in Salinas. The witness described the suspect vehicle as a light colored Sports Utility Vehicle or Van, and was seen driving eastbound on E. Laurel Dr. when it struck the pedestrian, and fled. The victim remains in critical condition. Anyone with information regarding the incident is encouraged to call the Salinas Police Department.
(07:25) The California Department of Transportation announced it reopened a storm-damaged portion of Highway 35 near the Santa Cruz county line yesterday at 9:00 am. The 200-foot section of highway was completely washed away by severe storms last February. Another storm-damaged section of Highway 35, located one mile from this project, also reopened yesterday morning.
(06:55) Monterey - Caltrans is scheduled to conduct a public auction for a parcel of excess land in Monterey County this month. Prospective bidders may visit the site at 17877 Cross Road in Prunedale tomorrow from 3:30 to 4:30 pm, and on January 18 from 10 to 11 am. (06:35) The Caltrans Monterey Maintenance team is scheduled to perform bridge repair tomorrow on southbound Highway 1 in south Marina. The southbound Number 3 (far right) lane of Highway 1 will be closed at First Street undercrossing from 9 am until 1 pm. Caltrans reminds motorists to move over and slow down when driving through Highway work zones.
(06:20) Santa Cruz - Authorities reported that a 27-year-old man, from Santa Cruz, was arrested yesterday in connection to a burglary that took place in Scotts Valley. The suspect was caught on Security video Sunday night in the Whispering Pines neighborhood. After a picture of the suspect was shared on several social media sites, officers spotted him yesterday in San Lorenzo Park, and he was booked into Santa Cruz County Jail.
Chefs, who wish to take part in next month’s 37th annual Santa Cruz Clam Chowder Cook-Off, need to register for the “rain or shine” event. A workshop about regulations for short term rentals in Big Sur is slated to be held tomorrow in Salinas. Big Sur residents have lobbied to establish their own set of regulations for short term rentals, instead of being under the county’s short term rental rules. The workshop starts at 1:30 p.m tomorrow, in the county building located at 168 W. Alisal.
A local organization is still accepting applications for the 2018 Jimmie Cox Memorial Scholarship. The $4,000 award will go to a new, or returning, college student, who is majoring in agriculture. Eligible students must be attending, or have attended, a school in the Pajaro Valley Unified School District, or be a member of the Santa Cruz County Farm Bureau. Criteria for the scholarship are based on student leadership skills, a demonstrated commitment to the industry, good grades and financial need.
