Monologue

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing a news article on a government study that was halted.  The National Cancer Institute study was looking into the effects of vitamin E and the trace mineral selenium and the prevention of prostate cancer.  Dr. Wallach questions the efficacy of the study asking "what type of selenium was given and how much".  Citing several previous studies that have found benefits with both selenium and vitamin E.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news story regarding two studies published on an increase in spending on type II diabetes care.  In 2001 spending on diabetes drugs was 6.7 billion and now in 2007 spending increased to 12.5 billion.  Expert say that this is due in part to an increased number of patients.  But the big reason is more and more doctors are prescribing newer more expensive drugs.
