Monologue

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing news articles concerning surgical procedures.  Citing an article in the New England Journal of Medicine that concluded knee replacement surgery for either osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis are completely unwarranted.  Another article stated that many times disk replacement to relieve lower back pain is also unwarranted.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article concerning the various financial connections that most doctors have with medical device and pharmaceutical companies.  The story oultines a specific case of a woman who had lower back pain and her surgeon recommenced disk replacement surgery.  Following the procedure the woman was in terrible pain, could only walk with the aid of a walker and required a second procedure to fix the first.  The woman later found that her surgeon had financial ties to the company that made the replacement disk.
