Monologue

Dr. Wallach starts todays show discussing the rising cost of fuel in the U.S.  Also cites several companies that are laying off employees and cutting back services.  Doc contends that people should be looking for ways to "recession-proof" their lives.  Asserting that one method is to take control of your own healthcare by educating yourself.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news story regarding a top executive of a drug company.  Apparently Dr. W Scott Harkonen is facing two felony indicments for wire fraud and marketing violations.  This doctor used only part of the results from a clinical trial involving the drug Actimmune.  The FDA approved the drug for use in two rare diseases in children.  But Harkonen was using the partial results to claim the drug decreased the mortality rate of patients with idopathic pulmonary fibrosis by 70%.  Despite the fact that during the original clinical trials the FDA told the company the analysis did not support approval of Actimmune for the lung disease.
