Contending it is always good to be prepared for fires, storms, droughts or the grid going down.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article concerning a meta-analysis of 174 previous studies. Looking to quantify how much exercise is needed to result in good health. The studies spanned nearly 40 years. Examining the effects of exercise on five chronic diseases:breast cancer, colon cancer, diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

Because of new rules from the federal government extremely ill patients are being dropped off of the transplant lists. In the first five years of the new rules 4300 transplant candidates were removed from the list. Up 86% from 2311 patients dropped in the five years prior.

Dr. Joel Wallach begins the show today discussing long living cultures. Citing a National Geographic magazine special edition. The edition outlines several reasons why these various cultures live longer than other cultures. Things like they walk a lot and perform manual labor late into life. Doc asserts they missed the main reason these cultures live long. Minerals from their cooking and heating fires in the form of ash from burned wood.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article about seniors experiences with hospitals. One study found that one third of patients over 70 years old and over half of patients over 85 leave the hospital more disabled than when the arrived. The story cites the specific case of a 75 year old woman who had a hospital stay after a fall. Prior to entering the hospital she was active and worked as a special education tutor. After a three week stay in the hospital and three weeks in a rehab facility. She had to quit her job, was unable to drive for months, is weaker, shaky and unable to think clearly.
